I just linked in with someone today for rescues in the turtles area. I actually came home with 3 today even. they are all ornate box turtles. Their condition is ..
**very dehydrated
**eyes swollen soo much they are shut
**1/2 in hibernation
** person i get them from thought they had an eye infection [not case from what i see, there is no pus, discharge or the like]

Good news is...I have already gotten 2 of them to open their eyes...am working on rehydrating them...the eyes do NOT appear infected after they open em....they are "waking" up....
Here's pic of one of them....

This is all 3 of them..

Poor things some people should not get pets (reptiles) if they don't know how to care for them I would be interested but I'm in Ca and I would have to talk my girlfriend into it lol. how much would the fees and shipping be ?.

T..The problem with these ones is easily defined. Someone was prolly in a hurry to "hibernate" these turtles in order to get 'em to breed after the hibernation for them. They are actually a breeding trio..1.2.0. Someone did NOT take the time to properly "establish" their health before attempting the hibernation of them at all They were NOT properly hydrated prior to attempting the hibernation.
As of now..I have ..
1 that is fully out of "hibernation", eyes fully opened and NOT swollen any longer.
1 that is halfway out of hibernation, eyes open but still swollen.
1 that only shows a hint of being out of hibernation , eyes NOt open and also still fully swollen shut.
ALL 3 of them are still being rehydrated, this will prolly take a few days time as they we're so dehydrated.
I do have someone, my niece, who has asked for them already now. She actually has been working with them even. We're attempting to promote a feed responce in them still even. I will have more turtles coming in as the weeks go on also. I have another member of RTb picking up a pair for me even this week from another source.
I have no problem shipping turtles anywhere in USA...BUt I wouldn't even consider shipping these ones anyway at this time due to the issue of the hibernation AND the cold weather now. The last thing I would want would be to have them sink into a hibernation during shipping due to the cold weather.
I would NOT ask for anything above the actual shipping costs of any rescues, unless I had paid $$ to obtain them myself. If a rescue was to have MAJOR medical costs such as meds...we could discuss such at that point. If you want turtles..What kind would you want???[addsig]

Eyes swelling is usually a sign of a Vitamin A deficiency.
Poor diet...

YUP RAVNOS..Covering that one also..Didn't overlook it at all..Thanks for the input. I'm thinking that since they were severely dehydrated...AND allowed to get into this condition by previous owner...that they also did NOT have the proper lighting or diet either. HI Lori,
Mine love earth worms and fresh fruit,,, they could proably use a few days in some sunlight.
I also have read that they have lots of problems if they are'nt kept in a humid environment.MIne burrow down a few inches in the ground and winter over under one of my trees in the back yard they sleep the winter away I usally see just the top of the shell poking up I usally muclh around themand the rest of the plants and they all seem to make it thru the winter They must have an antifreeze property intheir blood cause we have had some rather chilly winters, and they have been found in up state new york .
Most breeders I talked to use masonary block around a garden so the turtles can feast on non toxic plants and grass. they usally cover one side of the corral with a cover of sometype to prevent over heating,,, the love the rain proably because it brings the worms up.. I have three now possible more and its egg laying season around father's day...
Can't wait doug

I have had a box female for a few months now, my son actually rescued him from a dog who was "playing" with her. My son promptly named her "Emmitt", a name that he calls everything, from dogs to stuffed animals.

She weighs roughly 5 lbs, and is very responsive to my attention. She even has gone so far as playing fetch. This game takes quite awhile, but when she finally returns it is quite a sight. She enjoys lukewarm baths and sunlight, and will sometimes crawl up my shirt and will hold onto my shoulder.

My question is this-
In Atlanta, we generally have very humid, hot summers, so keeping a healthy environment is rather simple. With winter coming, I've been trying to find information on the proper habitat, and haven't really found anything that looks helpful. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I've seen lots of info on hibernating, but is this a recommended practice for all turtles? If so, what is the safest way to force hibernation? I am concerned about the health and happiness of my recently acquired turtle.

This is a link to the carehseet on Box turtles that can be found on Redtailboa.net.

It has a section on how to hibernate box turtle for the winter.

Good Luck.
