terrapins with grey shell
Hey ...
I just took in two small terrapins (yellow bellied sliders). Their shells are all grey and a bit like sandpaper, and they are kind of "wrinkled" in their growth. They are not sick as such, and eat, swim and sunbade as they should. I wonder why they have become like this? Is it lack of the rigth food, no sunligth or what? And what can I do to help this condition
PS Will post picture soon -- just have to catch them first, as they live in my very large garden pond ...

Re: terrapins with grey shell
I guess the first question is are you sure they are yellow-bellied sliders. Your use of the word "terrapin" leads me to believe that perhaps they are diamond-back terrapins, which do have a rough carapace. Photos of the head & neck, carapace and plastron would help.

Re: terrapins with grey shell
You have come to a good place for help! Welcome, and good luck catching them so we can see some pictures. Some experts like John White will be able to identify them, I am sure.

Re: terrapins with grey shell
Thank you for rapid and concerned respons. I will "go swimming" tomorrow. I had not even concidered that it might be another type of terrapin! Still, I sadly think that it's a couple of misstreated "yellow bellies", but I do not know all the different types that have been/are for sale her i Denmark. The shell is hard all over, no soft spots or anything so please tell me its not shell rot.
