Painted Turtle

can anyone tell me the requirements for keeping a painted turtle? i'm not sure from what area yet. however, it's like an inch long, quite small. someone is wanting to give it away and i've another friend who is setting up a water/ground terrarium and is considering taking it. he currently has a very, very large tank...60g perhaps?

Check into the under 4" law also. that would apply to these turtles I beleive. That page looks fine.. cept for the high degree basking spot for the turts.. These turts atre found in areas even like New England where they are used to major drops in temps and I do NOT provide such a high basking spot for mine that I keep due to such. try to mimic the local as much as possible btw in the area of lighting/temps etc for the turts. Basically.. as small as these ones are.. that size tank is waaaay too big for them IMO also. try a 20long to begin with and as they grow..move up from there. Also as young uns like this..make sure that you keep their water depth quite low even..like about no more than 5-6" of water. You can either give them a land/water set up or go woth a water type set up and provide them with wood or such that they can utilize to climb out of the water when they want to is all. Do NOT try and force any hibernation type thing on them either. Long as they are healthy .. if they need it, they will do it on their own. Locally here.. we find painteds doing this in the water..shallow parts of course.. even. Basically it is like a puddle type area that they will do this in even. When they get larger though they do need a 50/50 land/water area IMO. As for feeding... they will eat greens and also fish and those pellets stores sell. Get them started on a varied diet.. It is harder to get them to take a variety later if you don't. they also need UVB lighting btw.

well, this turtle is already purchased and is in the possession of a friend. she bought it in a pet store in the state soooOoo...(shrug) this is also going to another friend. is there anyway he can adjust the tank so the turtle will fit inside the 75g but feel more comfortable?

the way he's going to set it up is rather elaborate. he's going to have a pump and filtration system with a dry ground area, a half-wet area, and a completely wet area. he's choosing plants and whatnot now. it promises to be quite nice. [img]modules/Forum/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif[/img]

what would you suggest for a basking spot temperature?

I used to have a couple and they are rather easy to take care of. They are incredibly tolerant as far as temp and what-not goes. Not to mention when they are big enough you can feed them goldfish and it's fun to watch. [img]modules/Forum/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif[/img]
