Turtle ID??
I was at work last night here in southern Maryland, and saw a massive turtle on the side of the road. Sadly I was unable to get pictures of it, but I have the dimensions and what not, can someone help me with ID? I have never seen a turtle this large in the wild....
approximate shell dimensions:
12" long
9" wide
4-5" tall (legs withdrawn)
estimated weight was 10-15lbs.
muddy colored shell with dim and minor reddish brown highlights. smooth shell top and bottom. approx 1" claws on all feet, hooked snout. Anyone have any ideas?

Re: Turtle ID??
Hm. On doing some more research, I think what I found was just a LARGE Terrapin...still not 100% though.
Adrya, the pic below is cut from your signature, which one is it? This is almost exactly what I saw.

Re: Turtle ID??
Did it look like this:

Northern Red-bellied Cooter (Pseudemys rubriventris)

Re: Turtle ID??
maybe it was an alligator snapping turtle. i know they have long tails, and can get quite large. they also have a sharp, hooked beak type thing

Re: Turtle ID??
John: The coloring and patterning on that isn't quite right, also this guy had no webbing.
spike: it's not the alligator snapping turtle, good thought though.

Re: Turtle ID??
I would imagine by your description, it was a common snapping turtle... 1" inch claws on all feet doesn't sound like any other turtle I have seen... I can only think it was a snapping turtle. Was it all brown? Did it have any other colors? Yellow? Striping on the limbs and head?
I have some Northern Redbelly Cooters and the male doesn't have 1" claws on all his feet... nor is he that big.. lol My female is about 12" carapace length, but what you described is not a NRC.
