Three-toed box turtles (Terrapene carolina triunguis) are not indigenous to New Mexico. The turtle is an older Desert Box Turtle (Terrapene ornata luteola). Unlike the Ornate Box Turtle (T. o. ornata) the Desert Box Turtle loses the pattern on the carapace as it ages.
