question about sun turtles

A friend of mine had a sun turtle lay about ten eggs in her yard the other day. I looked up some info on them today and it said that they do well in captivity. I'm just looking for opinions as to whether you guys think it would be cruel to see if I can get one after they hatch? My kids have been begging for a turtle and I wouldn't mind one of these. And also does anyone know of their temperament? Do they make good pets if you get them young?

I can't seem to figure out how to get the picture from the website to post here. I'm so computer illiterate!! Any way, they are also known as the painted turtle. I guess they are mostly found in southern new england.

Around here every one knows them as sun turtles.
Good ole new england is always a little "different". LOL . I'll do a search and see what I can find.

it would be the eastern painted turtle and they are great pet turtles as long as you keep the water clean. they happen to be my favorite turtle. a turtle is a turtle you can't train them not to bite you you can train them to come to you when you call them. don't stick fingures in front of there mouth
