A baby Sulcatta! Since we are moving south soon, we decided that it's going to be OK to get one of these guys...especially since they are so small right now. When I went to the herp store 2 days ago I saw there little guys and I knew my fiance would break down and get one for me! All I had to do was ASK him to take me there yesterday....no fuss no muss!!
So, here's our new baby..."Morla"

Is that a true African Sulcatta or a greek? You know if it's an African (it looks like one from the pics) that little kiddo will get to be about 200 lbs and need to free roam and free dig in a back yard. They are not small animals.

Morti:
Is is a true African. We know that he/she will get really big when fully grown, and we are planning on having enough room for him/her. So, don't worry. All is under conrol. And also, not all of them get to be 200 lbs. In a bunch of articles I've read they say that only some of them get to be 200lbs and over. It's more like 50-80 for females and 80-100 for males.
Maybe there are some that eat the homes they are in and become 200 + lbs! hehe But even if we end up having one that is a biggin' we'll take good care of her/her. There's no doubt about that!

Hey PC I have a little guy myself and another on hold I think they are great! Yeah there's plenty of room to free roam in the south! I really wish I knew a good way to sex these guy's! Actually I picked one out that had a different shaped shell on the bottom from what I already had, so hopefully!!! Finger's crossed!!! Just remember to treat them like cow's and not reptile's! I would take the wood out of the tank and get some Timothy Hay for the little guy they are grazing animal's and will get most of the fiber from the hay. Also they tend to mouth everything in the tank (wouldn't want an impaction from wood!)

Thanks for the info Shad. The guy at the store had them on hay, but they didn't have any (in stock) and he reccomended the stuff he's on now. (small wood chips stuff). He seems to know not to eat it b/c when he gets a little piece in his veggies he pushes it out. Guess it doesn't taste too good! But tomorrow when I go to work I'll get some hay. (is regualar hay OK?) We use it for the goats and pig. They eat it all the time. It's the big bale type. Or should I just get Timothy hay?

Hey again PC yeah that's right across the border from me about 1 1/2 hour's from me! Um let's see regular hay? I don't see why not as long as he has something to get plenty of fiber from! I give mine dark green's everyday about 1/4 cup and if he eat's it all fine and if not fine! The biggest part should be high fiber thing's like the hay! Also they love dandylions, prickly pear cactus, and dark green's! I'm sure you may know this also stay away from fruit's and any type of bean's! Ocassional sweet potato is fine in small amount's very small use it as a treat! Anyway back to the hay you probably would like the look of the Timothy better than regular hay and I'm believe it's much eaiser for them to eat! Also hay for the substrate is better than other thing's it build's better muscle tone and help's the little guy to be able to right himself if he flip's over!!! (Something we don't wont to start with!) If no one told ya they can sufficate if they flip and can't turn back over. Anyway I could go on and on but here's a good link of info! I don't know how much longer it'll be up the woman who ran the site commited suicide (bummer!) but go have a quick look!!

You learn well Eric How's that lil one doing anyway? As for the timothy..yeah I would definately get your lil guy off the substrate you have him on atm and go with the timothy. Also on the sexing of the tort.. you will basically need to wait till it's about 3 years old most likely...2 if your lucky.
On the death of the Turtle Cafe owner... such a tragedy.. apparently she took her own life just last week As for her site..her husband has decided to keep the site up and running as a memorial to her

Let me tell you about the turtle that came with the house........or maybe not....It was over 100 years old and loved the plums in the orchard... That is a true memory! She was neat! How old fashioned, "Neat"....! What a very pretty baby! I know you will get to love her a looooong time.
And what a terrible tragedy about that woman feeling so lost and desperatly alone to do something so heartbreaking! Her poor friends and family. What a loss and a waste. To take one's own life, how very tragic, indeed.
