Bet you've never done this before...
Hope these pictures come up here ok. I work for the museum of natural history here and this is me and a few volunteers butchering a galapagos tortoise. They were there for a couple hours, between today and yesterday I was there 12. I'm in the green.

Plastron

I have a couple more but I'm having uploading issues... eh well, enjoy.

Well we just took all the meat and guts off of the bones. Now that that's done we feed it to flesh-eating beetles (dermestids) to get the bones nice and clean. Then we're going to put it back together and but it on display.

A friend of mine on another forum is in the process of doing this to 2 blue tongue skinks- one a baby, one full grown. I could never take part in this process, but I'm always fascinated by the results.
The whole beetle thing sounds almost Egyptian, but it's what she's doing too.

I surely hope that the tortise had died of natural causes and the museum aquired it frozen or somethinglike that. I would hate to think that it was killed so that it's bones could be displayed.

Such an animal would never be destroyed by such an institution. But even in its death, it can continue to educate. I would guess that it is one of Zoo Atlanta's that died and was donated to UGA.

wow thats crazy. the biggest thing ive ever dissected is a frog. this reminds me of that episode of south park where the class accidentaly dissects a group of manatees that were supposed to go to an aquarium or something. Anyone ever see that one?

It was property of Zoo Atlanta, but was living at San Diego Zoo. It was 42 years old, and died of internal bleeding due to ulcers. It weighed 190-something kilos. Imagine the cost of shipping it frozen! (I forgot to ask how much it cost)

My repertoire of butchering so far consists of: 3 turkeys, 1 canadian goose, 1 deer, 1 galapagos tortoise. I've only been on the job since early march. I'd like to do some other herps, we have a couple bags full in the freezer, and I have my eye on a caiman and a copperhead or two...
