Thumbs down russian tortoise question

Do russian tortoises need year round heat, my friend (I repeat my friend , not me) has a russian tortoise and the past 3 months he has been keeping it in a cold room with no heat source what so ever. Ive constantly asked him what the he-- he thinks hes doing and he stupidly replies "he's in slumber" (slumber WTH is slumber?, you mean hibernation?)
Well now he said he thinks his tortoise is dead and I think it is, he has no concern for reptiles what so ever, he dosent give a crap about temps and humidity ranges, so my friend your thoughts.

from what I've read they use UV to properly get vitamins and need a heat gradient,,,warm side up to 90. With all due respect to you, your friend is a fricking goofball!

actually russian tortioses DO hibernate.
The way to this indoors however is tricky and heat/UVB should never just be cut off.
Bert at agama sells these guys and his "sleep" each winter. But they do it outdoors and the sun will always be there in case the animal needs to bask.

Yep, Nicole is right. The climate in the Russian's native range is closest to that of Minnesota's. I suspect this may be why there hasn't been much success in breeding this species, because people are not allowing them to hibernate properly. I have been thinking about keeping russian torts when I do actually have a yard for them. Colorado's climate is milder than Minnesota, and not as mild as Alabama (where Agama Int'l. is located), and our climate is plenty dry. So I'm hoping I'll have some success with brumating them out here.

Bry

Talking

I could be wrong but russian tortoises live in deserts.....
hot dry areas like afghanastan, pakistan, southern russia , iran..
they are only active for a few months of the year...
they hibernate from oct-march then they aestvate from the heat in june.july and august....
Its nothing like minnesota.....
