Lucky little tyke that you came along. I imagine in a day or two he would have just been an unidentifiable dark splatter in the road.
Good luck with it.

Highlander,
Can you post a pic of the turtle's plastron?
I would suggest that you consider using a softer substrate for neonate turtles.

LOL Yeah but i would damage the meter when i would have to beat someone.
We see so many turtles come in the have never even had a basking spot. Just a half filled aquarium and if the turtle is lucky the tank is equipped with a filter. It's sad how uneducated people are with turtles. We get many turtles in where their shell doesn't grow but the turtles body does, so it looks like the turtle is outgrowing its shell.
By saying this I'm not implying Highlander is uneducated

No worries, I didn't interpret it that you meant that.
As a matter of fact, the first thing I did upon making the decision to keep him (well...I'm calling it a "him", I actually have no idea at this point...from what I understand it's pretty difficult to determine the sex of a turtle this small) was to go online and look up as much information on the proper care of painted turtles as I could find.
I'll admit, I haven't implemented it all yet (I've got a light on the cage, but I haven't had a chance to get a UVB yet)...but that was simply due to a lack of time and money during the week. He will be getting everything he needs as soon as I have the chance to get it (I would have already had everything if I knew I was going to be adopting a turtle...but it came upon me rather unexpectedly...).

Any recommendations on what sort of substance I might use as a substrate?

Eastern Painted Turtle....that brought back fond memories. That was my first reptile I ever had, back in the 4th grade. He looks like a fresh hatchling. Looks to be like his york was recently abosrbed from that pic for the plastron. By the way, be careful on that substrate, I know its been mentioned before. Small rocks like that can be easy digested by the turtle while he is eating, causing some big problems. Take care of that lil one, and thanks for the pictures.
