I've heard nothing but amazing things about Ackies, esp. the yellow subspecies. They stay at a much more manageable size than tegu's, consequently eating less and requiring much less space, and from what I understand can be rather personable, curious, even "friendly" little buggers! The reptile shop has several, both red and yellow from hatchling to adult size, and they are the most active, curious, dare I say precocious lizards I've ever seen. I've seen them handled and they are a pleasure. As with any case there are exceptions (we've all seen the ball python that thinks it's a black mamba), but for the most part they seem to be docile. I'd have one, heck, maybe 2 or 3 even, but I'm sticking with pythons for awhile

i have never seen a perentie tripod that would be awesome. yes i have seen the crosses. for selective breeding i favor the tiger banded lace monitors or the lace monitors with hints of purple.

every time I look at a monitor I get the bug for one...and I have had a really strong urge for a nile believe it or not. I don't have to have a lap lizard to appreciate one. My life is upside down because of the fire--and in the past I have had space issues. With tegus you can let them get their humidity form their hidebox...let them free roam and interact with the kids. Same with cyclura.
With monitors, most need a very large--very specialized type of environment.
With crocs --not only are the huge but the are also arboreal...I mean the enclosure would have to be HUGE. It's intimidating. And my children are young.
But someday..

I was told by a friend who (should) know that the Ackies are 'heartbreakers' because they are great lizards and above-average captives but have relatively short life spans. Your heart breaks when they die, so to speak.
.
What are the average life-spans of these different lizards?
.
Gus.

Argentine black and white tegus have been known to live more than 20 years.
