My Tegus!
Ok well I thought I should post some pictures of my tegus considering thats the main thing I specialize in when it comes to reptiles...
To start off, I would like to say I currently have 5 tegus.
1.2 Argentine Black and White Tegus
and 1.1 Blue Tegus 66% het Albino
I got these tegus over a 1 year time period. When I got the first one, ya he was a bit nippy when he came out of the box and for about 2 months. But with lots of love, dedication, and trust, he overcame this timidness towards humans. Now hes a 3' big baby of love. Sometimes he throws "some" tempertantrums, but other than that hes the coolest tegu I've seen. I named him Rex because he resembles a dinosaur
Heres a picture of when he first came to my house. Check out the stunny white he has one him. Hes one of the whitest tegus I've ever seen with my two eyes.
Hes also very funny when hes out. He loves to hang out and sleep on your chest, or go behind your back and sleep. A lot of times when I'm on the computer he likes to get behind my back and dig into the chair and sleep there.
Right now hes sleeping for the winter. When he wakes up, I'll take more pictures. Heres a picture of him on the my chair before he went under.
Here are my 2 girls. They are very very tame tegus. Even when they first came out of the shipping box, they were very tame. Currently I house them in 30 gallon rubbermaids. When they awake from hibernation, they will be moved to custom 6'x2'x2' cages. They love to sit in front of my window and soak up the heat from the summer sun. They cant anymore though, well not atleast until they wake up from hibernation. I named the whiter one stella and the darker large one Athena.
Last buy not least, my blue tegus 66% het albino. They were very skiddish when I first got them. I would walk downstairs and you could hear loud bumping noises, it was them running back and foward hitting their nose on the cage "trying" to escape.
Here is the male.
and the female
Their names are Artemis and Pandora.
I hoped you enjoyed my pictures.

tegus rock...I think they are the best carnivores you can own.....cyclura would be the very best omnivores. But I'm a large lizard fan for sure

I miss my tegus, they are the coolest lizards to be sure. When they get real big they are fun to leash and litter box train. So dang smart it is silly. Do you feed them turkey diet, or just rodents/chicks? So cute.

I dont feed any turkey anymore. I use to feed it sometimes, but since it has 0 nutritants, its pointless to feed unless you want to clear their systems.
I dont stick to one thing. I use a variety of "diets". Everyday they get some sort of fruit (at least 3 types of fruit), then they get their main meal which consists of rodents one day, roaches another day, and crickets another. Sometimes they get chicks inbetween with other types of prey, but I mainly stick to that.

Ya space is a big factor with tegus. I currently house 5 of them and its hard to do. Next spring, I'll have 7 tegus, 2 which im breeding.

I had no idea they slept for the winter?! Do you cool them in order to encourage the rest in order to breed the next season?

You seem to say they are all nice and tame? Its not that i dont beleive but i have this thing when it comes to carnivirous lizards that i cant be comfortable around them. Kinda like when someone is holding their first snake they think if the head gets near them their going to get bit...I think i will try handeling some more often.
By the way they look great really cool looking miniture dinosaurs lol!

The argentines do and most of the time will brumate for the winter.
The blues dont. Blue tegus orgin is around the equator, thus its warm year around. They dont usually need brumation and still will breed fine without.
haha believe it or not, they are 100% dog tame. Even my 6 year old iguana isnt as tame as these tegus.

I'm glad that they do brumate though. Not only doesnt it help with their health and prolong their lifespan, it also gives me some time off of caring for them.
The times they go to sleep and wake up are perfect if you house them outside. See they'll wake up in spring. At this time you can keep them outside. Around Augest/September they starting to go down. Thats the time where you bring them inside and put them in a rubbermaid. Then in a few weeks they will be completely out. Sometimes they do get up to get a drink, but I've only noticed this with my females, my male sleeps and wont get up. Occasionally he'll wiggle around to reposition, but for the mos part he sleeps like a rock
