He may be an amazing man, I have never met the fella and doubt I ever will, but why is he doing this? The same reason NERD do it.... to make money.

Please don't compare Bert to NERD. The man has an extremely high IQ, serious ethics and is a very good friend to alot of people both in herpetoculture and globally just because of the person he is.
Why is he doing this?
Why not email him and ask.
He always answers every single email. The only thing that would delay an answer is Daytona or traveling with his animals abroad. Other then that, he is happy to answer any questions you have about his breeding practices.
But until you get an answer, do NOT bad mouth him on this site.

Bert is a highly intelligent guy..
Wonder why he decided to create what sounds like a hybrid?
I thought he was opposed to most hybrids? Wonder if there is something genetically very similar in these two tegues? I'd email and ask, but I probably wouldnt understand a word he says LOL!!!!! Anyways when he is successful, Im sure he will publish something about it and why he did it, Id love to read it!

Bert told me this:
Well, in Argentina these two species live side by side.
So it must occur in nature too.
I simply wanted to see what they would look like.
The first 4 hatched and they look like normal BW tegus.
I had the male red and female BW together this entire year.
It may be that the babies are normal BW tegus, in case the animal can store sperm from last year.
_______________________
These species cohabitate where they originate from in the wild. Chances are there are many natural crosses no one is aware of due to their appearance (they seem to look like BW's so far).
I was thinking this myself because they are both from Argentina, but I didn't want to say until I heard from Bert.
We have similar situations with the cyclura who are in the Cayman Islands. Blood tests are needed to really see any crosses between nearby islands.
Please refrain from calling well known (and loved) people outrageous names for no reason. This man has been a ground breaker for half a century. For more info you can read about him at www.agamainternational.com
Feel free to email him and exchange questions with him. Although English is something like his third language--he is very prolific in the English language and enjoys talking about his work.

The issue of hybridizing or even 'allowing animals to intergrade' is a passionate one, especially for those who take the stance that it is ethically and/or morally wrong.
With all due respect, Nicole, knowing someone personally does not change that fact. Anyone we passionately disagree with is loved by many someones and respected by many someones. I would even bet the cable guy who was called stupid for fleeing your house and is 'obviously' only a cable guy because he IS stupid is loved and respected by many.
If we're going to quash calling Bert an idiot, then we need to quash calling the cable guy stupid rather than insulting him even further.
In Bert's own words that you have added to the quoted post, he is only assuming the intergrade must happen naturally; he doesn't really know this for sure. So yes... well known, well liked, or well loved, he is playing a role that many passionately believe should have been left to nature.
And, of course, since his reasoning is "I simply wanted to see what they would look like," we won't see high prices when they go on the market, right?
Time will tell...

the only one he has that interests me is the chinese crocodile lizards.
if he really wants to help herpiticulture he would breed the common wild caught species in the trade. monitors.

Same lizard differnent color...who cares? It's not like he was crossing a tegu and an iguana or something. I don't see this as any different than breeding a BCI with lots of pink to one with lots of yellow.
