Look New tegu owner from cold Poland

Helo everyone

I wolud like to say hello to all tegu owners and friends.

I am new in lizard word, I got my tegu yesterday.
I went to pet shop to get iguana iguana, but when I saw him I knew that Tegu ( or Teju as we call him in Poland) is what I want.

So I got him, less then 36 hrs, but I already can tell that I made a good choice picking him up.

I must be frank and say, that I knew nothing about tegus when I bought mine.
Now, after surfing through all sites about Tegu I could find I can tell that we gonna be happy together.

My tegu is ( according to `diffrences`pictures from agama international) B&W Argentinan, but the lizard`s CITES documents tells that my Tegu comes from Guayana, so Columbia is much closer,,, maybe he is columbian.

Since I am going to built his cage, right now he`s living in 60x30x45cm caGE, which is too small for him, so probably that`s the reason why he escaped from his terra while I was taking an afternoon nap.
All the day he has been acting like a dead man, but as soon as I went to bed, he got away. What a intelligent beast But I found him sitting cool in my shoes, and he didn`t resisted when I was taking him back to cage. It gave me an idea that he could be a lil beat tamed already.

My CITES papers are saying that he has been imported into Poland at 2005-16-09, so I am wondering how old tegu needs to be to survive such a long travel ( Guayana-Poland - at least 10hrs in cold plane ). It`s really hard to measure him since we are 2getrher only for 2 days, but he is about 45cm long. Do You have any idea how old is he? He spent over 5 months in pet store, so I imagine that those door knocking kids was very stressful for him and maybe he is not growing well enough. I hope I`m wrong on this.

Next thing is taht he only eats when I don`t look at him. I was trying to fed him since yesterday, but he didn`t want to touch anything handled by me. And when I woke up today, I saw that the corn I left in the cage was gone.
And the tegu was gone But as I wrote down earlier, I found him.

I`m sure he`s going to give me a lot of fun and `love`, when I`ll take good care of him, so if You have any tips for `just started to live here` tegus I`m waiting.

POZDRAWIAM ))) ( that`s in Polish)

Radek

1st bath

I took him for a short swimming in the tube tonight, but he started to run from me when I tried to dry him in towel.
But on the hands he is like lil child. The question is: is it becouse of fear or he is tamed enough?
I put him back in the cage, but as far as I can see he keeps his eyes closed. So probably too scared.Maybe I should leave him alone for a week or so?

Pozdrawiam

Radek

I am also new owner of a tegu in cold canada. this site http://www.agamainternational.com/pages/tegus.html
has good pictures to determine if you have a argentine or columbian tegu. One question I have is what temperature you are keeping your tegu at? I am keeping my habitat at 29c. this could be why it is so lazy! as for building a habitat yourself this is what I did. I found tabletops for sale in Ikea's "as is" section. They were 3ft by 8ft which allowed me to assemble four of them into a 8x3x3 (length, width, height) enclosure with wood frame doors on the front with plexiglass. They were the best choice for me because they were water proof and had attractive wood grain and were cheap! I installed resessed lighting into the top for basking lights and a 48" flourescent fixture for uv bulb. I put lighting on timer and installed heat lamps as well on a thermistat. the substrate is 6" of hemlock chips (do not use cedar). I am able to maintain 29c temperatures with 3 basking lamps (75w each) during the day. The heat lamps (2 100w) only come on at night. The woodchip substrate holds moisture well allowing habitat to remain humid. Tegu is shedding well due to the humidity. tegu eats fruit everyday and protein every other day.

I must be frank and say, that I knew nothing about tegus when I bought mine.
IS HE COLUMBIAN OR ARGENTINE? WHAT DOES HE LOOK LIKE AND HOW OLD IS HE?

My tegu is ( according to `diffrences`pictures from agama international) B&W Argentinan, but the lizard`s CITES documents tells that my Tegu comes from Guayana, so Columbia is much closer,,, maybe he is columbian.
CAN YOU POST A PIC?

Since I am going to built his cage, right now he`s living in 60x30x45cm caGE, which is too small for him, so probably that`s the reason why he escaped from his terra while I was taking an afternoon nap.

MY TEGUA HATE BEING LOCKED UP THEY ENJOY FREEDOM--SO IF YOURS IS ALREADY DISPLAYING THIS BEHAVIOR HE WILL MOST LIKELY BE SIMILAR TO MY OWN
All the day he has been acting like a dead man, but as soon as I went to bed, he got away. What a intelligent beast But I found him sitting cool in my shoes, and he didn`t resisted when I was taking him back to cage. It gave me an idea that he could be a lil beat tamed already.
OR VERY COLD...DON'T GET TOO COMFORTABLE YET

My CITES papers are saying that he has been imported into Poland at 2005-16-09, so I am wondering how old tegu needs to be to survive such a long travel ( Guayana-Poland - at least 10hrs in cold plane ). It`s really hard to measure him since we are 2getrher only for 2 days, but he is about 45cm long. Do You have any idea how old is he? He spent over 5 months in pet store, so I imagine that those door knocking kids was very stressful for him and maybe he is not growing well enough. I hope I`m wrong on this.
HE COULD BE ANYWHERE FROM 1 - 2 DEPENDING ON WHERE HE CAME FROM IF HE WAS BRUMATED AND HIS OVERALL HEALTH
Next thing is taht he only eats when I don`t look at him.
VERY NORMAL
I was trying to fed him since yesterday, but he didn`t want to touch anything handled by me. And when I woke up today, I saw that the corn I left in the cage was gone.
ARE YOU FEEDING SOME WHOLE PREY?
And the tegu was gone But as I wrote down earlier, I found him.

I`m sure he`s going to give me a lot of fun and `love`, when I`ll take good care of him, so if You have any tips for `just started to live here` tegus I`m waiting.
