Son wants a Lizard....
Well I've kept large snakes for some time now and my sone decided he wants a lizard... After doing some research and keeping in mind his likes we have narrowed it down to a few... I would prefer he get a beardie... Generally good dispositions and not too tough to care for... He however wants either a Sav or a Tegu.... I seem to think that out of the two a tegu would be best... Seems from what I have read that the blues and the Arg b&w have pretty calm dispositions compared to the Sav... I would still prefer the beardie though lol....He is 16 and very responsible andtimately the decision will be his... I would love opinions on the lizards mentioned and reccomendations... Thanks

If you get a tegu, be sure to get an Argentine, not a Colombian. The cheap ones are all Colombians and they do not generally have the good disposition you're looking for.

I don't know much about those other lizards, I just wanted to caution against green iguanas But it doesn't sound like that's on your list, so... good luck in whatever you decide!
I happen to really like beardies and chuckwallas. It is illegal to keep chuckwallas in my state, but I've heard of people in other states keeping them with a lot of success. They are both very friendly lizards that are easy to handle and get to a size that's big enough to really enjoy, but small enough to be manageable.

Don't get me wrong... I love green igs!... I just think they make crappy pets for the average pet owner... even for the average herper. And I really don't think it's an appropriate choice for a 16-year-old.

I'm not a lizard person at all but I thought that tegus get in excess of 3 feet. Please correct me if I'm wrong, they are good looking lizards though.

At my house I keep burms and two red tails... I got one of the red tails on a rescue situation and fell SOOOO in love with him... He really has been such a joy that I went out and picked up a female....We keep 5 retics at my brothers place and they are a joy as well
As for the lizards we have come down to two... He wants the Sav and I say Arg B&W Tegu.... I say this Tegu because it seems that more often than not the Savs are not as "easily" tamed as these guys...
Actually when I was his age I had a green iguana... Had it for three years and even with 4-5 a week handling it never really calmed down....

http://www.agamainternational.com/pages/tegus.html good pictures to help you determine if the tegu you may buy is argentine or columbian. often mislabled or unknown. for lizard eaze of keeping I would recommend a Crested Gecko because it does not need special lighting or heating. If you are not cold neither will your gecko
