yeah I hear ya...I got so tired of telling people that mound under the substrate was this great lizard...
But he did wake (in friggin june)...and I am convinced if I would have taken him to a vet or force fed him he would have either gotten very sick or died. There aren't very many docs who understand how to care for a tegu--it's hard unless you have really raised them yourself.
Bert is a great source of info but he deals with outdoor husbandry...and allows them to do what they do naturally. When you take them out of that and attempt to rewire them--it takes years. I would say it took 2 years befor they started acting like pet tegus...but still they get sleepy around now...

Mine still isnt sleeping completely, he eats a fuzzy about every third day now but he still comes out to bask daily for about an hour then he's gone under again. Im hoping this spring/summer I can work on taming him...He doesnt run when I look at him now but if I put my hand in the cage he stands up all big and tall and gets huffy...He huffs and puffs just like my bluetongue does when hes feeling cranky..

yah I remember those days
Mine used to rattle his tail like a rattlesnake too....
if he's eating a little and basking a little he's sleepy not completely gone under.
Just be sure not to discontinue his UVB---even if he doesn't wake for days...he needs to ither clean his system out or continue to bask periodically

wow, I never know how different Tegu's were. I didnt know that they go into hibernation either. It is hard to not take them out all the time trust me when I got my first monitor it was almost impossable to not take him out. But lot of poeple say that you should leave young monitor alone when they are young and let them get used to you. I am not sure if its the same as a tegu but it seem like it would be the same idea. My argusXflavi is always out and mostly sleeps at night. He will eat all day long. Does anyone know if monitors go into any kind of hibernation? Mine sure dont seem too. Good luck with him.
