Argentine Black & White Tegus questions.

I was interested in this animal ever since I first saw one. I don't have space for one yet, but I can see myself getting one in the future. However I do have a few questions.

1. I'm aware of their huge enclosure requirements, however what price range am I looking at for a ideal setup?

2. After the buying tegu, cage, and the appropriate equipment, such as heat source and hide, are tegus expensive to keep?

3. I hear that they hibernate for 6 months or so. Is it ok to wake them up to handle them, or am I supposed to watch them sleep for half a year?

4. I've had a hard time finding a good caresheet on them. Is there any you guys would recommend?

5. Do they make good pet? Are they jumpy, or nervous around people and active surroundings?

I appreciate any reply, even if you don't know all the answers.

1. I'm aware of their huge enclosure requirements, however what price range am I looking at for a ideal setup?
IT REALLY DEPENDS ON WHETHER YOU BUY OR BUILD...IF YOU CAN BUILD IT'S SO MUCH BETTER. I HAVE A 'CAGES BY DESIGN' CAGE FOR THE TEGUS. NOW THEY FREE ROAM AND I USE IT AS A BASKING STATION...BUT WHEN I HAD IT IN THE OLD HOUSE THEY USED IT AS A RESIDENCE AND FREE ROAMED FOR A FEW HOURS A DAY.
THE LESS YOU LET THEM OUT THE MORE SPACE THEY NEED IN THEIR CAGE.
2. After the buying tegu, cage, and the appropriate equipment, such as heat source and hide, are tegus expensive to keep?
IN THE WARM MONTHS THEY EAT LIKE MACHINES. YOU NEED TO GIVE THEM WHOLE PREY A FEW TIME A WEEK AND A SPECIALIZED TURKEY DIET THE REST. THEY EAT RODENTS AND CHICKS--MINE PREFER CHICKS.
THEY ALSO REQUIRE HIGH HEAT AND UVB---WHICH CAN COST ON A MONTHY BASIS FOR ELECTRICITY AND A YEARLY BASIS FOR BULBS
3. I hear that they hibernate for 6 months or so. Is it ok to wake them up to handle them, or am I supposed to watch them sleep for half a year?
WELL--IF YOU KEEP THEM WARM THROUGH THE WINTER MONTHS THEY WILL BE IN A SEMI SLEEP STATE. THEY WILL BASK SOMETIMES, BECOME LESS ACTIVE AND EAT ALOT LESS. AS SOON AS THE BIOLOGICAL CLOCK CLICKS ON FOR SPRING THEY WILL LOOK TO EAT MORE, BECOME VERY ACTIVE AND IN MATING MODE.
SOME TEGUS WILL COMPLETELY BRUMATE BUT THOSE ARE THE ONES KEPT OUTDOORS OR THE ANIMALS THAT ARE PURPOSELY KEPT COOL IN VERY CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENTS BY THEIR OWNERS.
4. I've had a hard time finding a good caresheet on them. Is there any you guys would recommend?
YOU CAN GO TO BLUETEGU.COM OR AGAMAINTERNATIONAL.COM FOR SOME GREAT INFO
5. Do they make good pet? Are they jumpy, or nervous around people and active surrounding
AS BABIES THEY ARE A LITTLE JUMPY BUT I HAVE TO SAY BOTH OF MINE WERE VERY TAME OUT OF THE BOX. WONDERFUL ANIMALS....JUST BE CAREFUL WITH NATURAL SUNLIGHT....IF THEY ARE NOT USED TO IT, THEY WILL FREAK AND BECOME VERY WILD.

Thanks a lot guys, you where very helpful. I really appreciate the long and detailed post Nicole. But what did you mean by free roam? Do you mean roam around the house, outside the enclosure? If so, are there any precations I should take before letting him/her roam about?

Right now they roam about a very large room---before they roamed the whole bottom floor of the house.
You have to tegu proof your home---and make sure the animal is large enough not to get under the stove and into places that can cause problems. When the lizard is small, you can let him roam a bathroom that has been checked for escape paths....you can sit on the floor and allow the animal to interact with you.....after a while you can then make the space larger until he gets used to you and walking about.
Some tegus are escape artists---an equal amount are completely satisfied with their surrounding and never try to get out. You have to treat them all the same at first until you get used to their personality.
Remember no one is really an expert.
Bert Langerwerf said something very wise once that I never forgot:
after raisings thousands of tegus for all this time they STILL suprise me. I never understood people who breed for a few years that claim to be experts. None of us are really experts if we really pay attention.
So true.

I always recommend Bert's page first but he hardly ever gets into indoor husbandry because the enclosures are all outdoors at agama. He never has to worry about bulbs or temps or any of the things that indoor hobbyists worry about.
Ron gets into the indoor aspect a little (even though I believe his terraria is outdoors too?) more.
I bought my Rhino from the St.Pierres....and the tegus, waterdargons, lacerta and beardies from Bert. He's really a wonderful breeder and a great person to know. Stella St.Pierre was very helpful with the purchase of the cyclura but everyone in the cyclura world who I respect and have met basically disagree with her ideas about diet and iguanas. She believes in alot of animal protien and they believe in none.
