nightlights produce no UVB at all.
Perhaps you are talking about a tube light + a nocturnal light?
You need a Mercury Vapor Bulb. This produces heat and uvb PLUS proper distance penetration. Tubes stop after a few inches and it depends on the type. Do you know what bulb it is? (It usually states it on the light itself)
I am asking alot because I had a man who was trying to raise his tegu like his monitor and the animal was not eating...aftre careful adjustments the animal began eating and everything was fine.
Every tegu reacts differently to fruit---reds need fruit to shed properly. Try blueberries...melon---whatver you have around the house. If he refuses it try putting it in his meat

don't know if I said this already (gets confusing when you post alot) but Reptile Direct online has bulbs much cheaper then most petshops...if you live outside of NY you get no tax either.
The TREX mercury vapor 100 watt spots are probably the best and most affordable choice for your setup right now. Put thwm on a timer set for about 7-6---cutting it down to 5 pm as the winter drags on. Have the nocturnal bulb come on when that goes off and you should be good to go
Tegus are great lizards....the color on yours should be awesome as he gets rid of his green baby color....keep some pics posted

oooooook, today i bought a slate rock and an Exo-Terra 100W basking bulb, so far it seems to be warming up, but time will tell whether or not it will heat up to the required temps., i'm just praying that this works, i just got off the phone with the guy at the pet store, he said that they kept him in a 15 gal. long and he was eating Cat Food and Crickets, so i'll pick some cat food up and hopefully that will work, i think i'm going to go now and get some crickets for him, he needs to eat, i don't like that he hasnt eaten, sorry, i get worried, the thing i hate the most is dead animals, or animals about to die, so i have to do what i can to get him to eat!!!

ok i got him some cat food and he ate some yesterday, it seems like he's in good shape and the heat and uvb is doing him good, he has energy and last night he actually walked around and i think he is getting used to his enviroment, he usually goes into his hide cave and disappears till the next day when i open it up to check on him, but last night he went in and out and surveyed the area pretty well and once i cut the basking bulb off and lower the temps he went into the cave and burrowed under the mulch, think im doing ok??

dog/cat food is fine for a treat or for what you are ding (getting him to eat) but keep in mind that anything more then one day a week is too rich and too high in D3 to be healthy. But once in a while is fine.
Also basking bulbs do not produce uvb---the only basking bulbs that produce ultra violet B are MVB...and exo terra does not make them.
