Tegus are (dependant of course on the species) very tameable and intelligent animals. My daughter Olivia who is 4 plays with Nico my male when she has no playmates. He is very patient with her and I really believe he realizes she's a child.
Both my tegus are smart, sweet and hungry

The blue cross you got is probably going to be gorgeous when he gets older and the colors start to come out. GREAT choice---he will not need such huge caging either. But they are addicting without a doubt

Let him be for a week if you can---keep the temps up because crosses need higher temps and make sure his hide is humid enough. If your setup is on the money (bulbs being important to baby tegus), and he begins to eat...and the temps are good---then in one week try the basic lizard thing (1-pet within the cage 2-lift up and pet within the cage 3- gently remove for short periods of time) do not move on to the next step until he does not flee from the previous one. This could take a little while but tegus are generally easier then any other lizards to tame.
Bribery works well too---find out his favorite foods (cooled scrambled eggs are usually popular) and give it a try hand feeding. Use tongs with a new animal---you have no idea at this point how he will react to your fingers. I still always make the children use hemostats when feeding the tegus---and basically the rule is tongs or stats are supposed to be used always (because they are not supposed to associate your hands with food), but I have to admit I hand feed my tegus with no problems. Everything from meatballs to chickens. The are wonderful animals.
Pick out a name??
