editing your own posts
this has to be the only thing i dont like about this forum, and its the only forum i come in contact with that is like it.
you get like a total of like 60 seconds to correct a typo, or add/ammend information or fix a broken link.
i think it should just be changed so that there is no time limit on editing your own posts. just my thoughts on that.

and i think that there should be a confirmation pop up, if you are making a post that sets off the profanity filter. like "are you sure you want to post this" or blah blah blah whatever. but give us a heads up, so we can remedy it. because i think that most of it is, profanity is such a part of our language, people dont always realize, or mean to, not that people are just running around trying to undermind the sites rules..

If you choose to "preview" your post before you "submit reply" it, it will show you if anything sets off the profanity filter. There are additional steps that members can take. Not everything requires a new tool or quirk for natas to add to the site. I'm just sayin'.

Yeah...preview your post
It's not a simple thing to just add a new idea for a feature. Someone has to write a program or script, test it and install it. Development for these new scripts can be a lengthy, challenging, frustrating task... For the most part, End user webmasters just go to the PHP download site and choose what's there that they want for their site. If you are volunteering to write the code, go for it! It does sound like a pretty good idea...that whole pop up "are you sure you want to post this" thing but again...previewing your post will work just as well.

but if you accadentally hit the make post button, or only use the quick reply like i do, you still dont get much of a chance to edit the post.

Indefinite editing is a bad idea, IMO. I can see some folks editing posts long after the original -- possibly in order to change the meaning or remove something they don't want it to say later. We should be accountable for our words, so indefinite editing is not a good thing.
As for the profanity thing -- again, my opinion -- it's pretty dumb to type out a cuss word. (The action, not the person) Talking like that is bad enough. Typing it out is a whole different story. There are PLENTY of adjectives/verbs/adverbs that can be used aside from the " four letter" variety. If people have problems finding a good word, two things should occur -- one, they need to rethink how they verbally relate to others; two, they need to get a thesauraus and learn a bit more about the language they speak.
That's how I feel about it. I used to cuss -- A LOT. I still might let a word slip if I hit my finger with a hammer or stub my toe hard. BUT, I know anyone can stop -- if they simply put their minds to it and quit. FWIW, I quit when my 2yo daughter (who's now 13) used a particularly vulgar word in front of several friends from church. It wasn't just that they were from church, but we were trying to make real friends -- and this incident was majorly embarrassing. I could have crawled under a rock! The friendships still grew, but the situation taught me a lesson.
IMO, respect for one's self and others (ladies, older folks, children) should be enough of an incentive to clean up our language. It may be commonplace on TV and music, but we shouldn't be " common" -- at least not out in public.
Flame away, if you like...

FLAAAAAAAMMMMMMMME!
Just kidding Charlie, I really see your point.. People WOULD be editing away and the New Posts would be swamping an already busy forum.
Ive used a couple of abbreviations I didnt realize were not allowed, and the stupid word HE'LL(as in HE WILL) keeps getting me...Im a lazy typer lol!!! I forget about the PREVIEW option, but I have gotten into the habit of reading my posts right after I hit REPLY.. That way I can quickly edit anything I worded wrong..
Anyways good point!

There's no substitute for polite and well-considered comunication. I'm not any Polly Anna about language and I can cuss but there's a time and a place for everything. I'm unsure why people feel the need to use the list of no-no's in their posts. BTW.. is there an actual list? Where can we view it? (probably that page is all asterisks and percentage-signs!). I don't want to sound like an old fogey but when I was growing up the use of those words would earn a quick smack upside the head.. this fostered an interest in other ways to express ourselves.
.
And to all the people out there who may think they have achieved the epitome of cussing, foul word vocabulary and what-have-you... you are babes in the world of bad language compared to this 5' 4" tall Argentinian gal that works for my partner in Can Cun.. she would make the first gunnery mate of the USS Missouri blush (even if he couldn't understand Spanish). So give it up! and express yourselves without the cussing.

I would not be opposed to 5 minutes to edit posts.
Those who must use profanity to communicate have a poor grasp of the English language.
Of course, when I am driving that goes right out the window. I just randomly but a noun and adjective together to call people. Sometimes it is profain, sometimes just confusing, like "Monkey Shaver", "Rump Thumper", "Jack Head", or "Gerbil Squatter". I get confused looks from passangers.

The justification I use to defend the TOS here is..Profanity offends some people. Maybe not many but it does offend some. The lack of profanity offends no one. I've yet to ever hear "That was a great read..it just needed more profanity."
As far as why the edit feature was put on a quick timer, we had a case a few years ago when a well known ball python breeder rep was in here. I won't mention names but the initials are N.E.R.D. and boasting about some of their venomoids that had and who did the operation etc. When some of us voiced our concerns about them dealing in and showboating (free handling) voids, She went back and edited her earlier posts and then claimed that they were all rescues dropped off by Fish and Game. BTW, Fish and Game was contacted and knows nothing about any rescue venomoids ever being turned over to any petstore including NERD. That's why you can't edit posts anymore.

ahhhhhhhh the whole "accountability" factor..Makes sense.
Ive managed to mostly refrain, and anyone that has met me knows, I have a great grasp of the English language...mostly all the 4 letter words though!

If you post a broken link then just post another reply updating it. Typos happen all of the time and it doesn't take that long to notice it after you post.

i have no idea why this turned into a debate about the profanity filter. that wasnt my suggestion, i understand there are valid reasons for having it, and i wasnt saying anything to suggest that it be changed, or disputing its purpose.
i use profanity when i am at home, and around my friends. however, when trying to have an intellegent conversation with people, i refrain from using it quite easily. never once have i used profanity in any of my posts here, and ive only had the filter show up when i skip the ' in he will.
i didnt realize this was such an emotional subject for people...
i didnt know the history behind why people couldnt edit the posts, i was just finding it annoying personally. like when i spout something like temperature sexing for female leopard geckos is 82, without checking, and then realize later that it was 80, and i dont want to deal with the hastle of making a new post. i also tend to make alot of spelling mistakes, in general, and on scientific names.
i dont neccisarily enjoy when i see 5 or 6 posts in a row from the same person, containing only a few words, and most of the space is taken up by signature.
yes, i understand there is a preview feature on here, and my bad for not using it. it was just... a suggestion.

I'm all for shorter signatures...

mmm if you catch a mistake you made after the edit time passes especially about temps or health concerns...anything important like that, by all means, msg someone on staff and have them edit it for you!

Editing should be allowed forever.
If you want to quote someone, quote them. They cannot edit your quote of their original post. But being able to edit your own post is a good thing.
Plus, if someone has replied to their post before they edit it, it will say Last edited by "user" at 00:00 time. notifying you that they have edited their post (obviously)
Not being able to edit after a minute or two is so sucky. giving us the option to edit does not require creating new programs, etc. so I say change it!
Profanity doesn't belong on this site, noone is arguing that it does.
The pop-up warning was a good idea, but its probably more trouble than its worth. Then again, if we were able to edit our posts, we could just go back and correct any mistakes we noticed after posting.
Many times I don't type what I mean to say, and I have to go back and edit. I LOVE the edit feature. Doesnt have to be forever...but 60 seconds is just plain weak!
(edit)if you only knew how many times I edited THIS post!!

Yes, but when I describe a particular Japanese mushroom or a type of dog that has a name based from a different culture that seems to correlate with an american profanity, it bleeps it. LOL That can be very frustrating. LOL
