Hey everyone,
I don't know how many of you soak reptiles in gatorade, but I do hear a few complaints about the stains it leaves on the animals.

Good news! The Gatorade company has put Gatorade Clear on the market, no dyes in it to stain your herps or clothes!

Just figured I would mention this!

thats cool!

soaking for dehydration?? hmmmmmm..... never did it with gatorade.
i did give a ball python some orange to drink once- he was goin' skinny on me. i could see the digust in his face he came up and took a big drink (i guess he thought it was water), looked up and then opend his mouth and was twistin' his neck all up. he got some of it to spill out.

i guess the clear would work a whole lot better! plus it wont be 6 bux a bottle like pedialyte

If I remember correctly, Lori soaks them in Gatorade. I think becuase it is cheaper, than pedialyte.
As for drinking, I imagine they would get a sour look from it!
But I don't know if letting them drink it would be good for the stomache and the jacobson organs, since it is chock full of citric and abscorbic acids, ( I think?!?)

I have heard of some people using Gatorade, but I always stuck to Pedialyte because of the lemon flavor of Gatorade...didn't think the snakes would like that too much Is this new Gatorade flavor free too? There has been a clear one before..it was called Lemon Ice.

No, they still have flavors! Some new ones and some of the older ones.
Maybe they could come out with a mouse flavored one some day!
I have heard others say they use it for soaking, for the re-hydration, but they usually always use the pedialyte for the internal treatment.

Gatorade is extremely useful for soaking dehydrated snakes. One of the people who popularized it was Jeff Gee in a short paper on problem feeders back in the 80's. Believe it or not, I still have a copy of it posted on a wall at my parent's house. The title of the paper- "My Snake Won't Eat!"

For those of you who don't know who Jeff Gee is, he was one of the driving forces behind North American herpetoculture. Although Jeff is the person who brought us hypo boas, most people think of Galapagos tortoises when they think of him. He was one of the few private individuals working with them at that time.

I thought Rich Ihle brought out the hypo/salmon boas.

Long before there were salmon boas, there were orange tail hypos. The first hypos were sold by Jeff for about $250 apiece.

Also keep in mind that while all salmons are hypo, not all hypos are salmon. Salmon is merely one variation of the hypo gene. There are a few different strains of hypomelanism in boa, all derived independently of one another.

I know this post is old but I spent 4 years doing raptor rehab and we used gatorade to rehydrate raptors and it works great.
