Well it look's like Wal-mart and GE are cashing in on the Reptile Trade. Today while walking around my local Wal-mart I was picking up some black light bulb's and noticed a package that looked like it had a snake on the box, well I picked it up to find that GE is now making Day & Night heat bulb's for reptile's! The day bulb's were 5 buck's and the black light's were 6 buck's! Anyway just thought I'd let yall know I picked up my regular bulb's they work just as good!!!!

COOL!!
The black lights that are not intended for reptiles can cause harm to your snake. They emit something nasty, I don't know exactly what but I have read it in a few places.

If memory serves me correctly, the black light that is used for heating is ok. It is the "trendy" black light used for the "super cool" lighting that are bad. Mainly because the light emmitted plays havoc on a snakes eyes, and prolonged use can cause eye sight problems. I believe that is what is wrong with them at least. Maybe someone else can add to what I said.

Yeah, I just heard the same thing from Thade in the chat about blacklights irritating the snake's eyes. So, since I want the best care for my new BP, I'm going to get a red light tomorrow since they don't see the red spectrum. If anyone knows exactly where some information relating to blacklights and snakes is, throw me a link.

My question is, why do you need a black or red light for anyway? I keep lights on a timer, on at 7:30am off at 9:30pm. I keep my heat pads and tape on 24/7.

I went to Wal-Mart and seen then today. Anyways, here, when running the AC, especially during the 12 off period, my cage temp could drop below 73 and I don't won't that, so to be sure, I always use a black/red light for the off period to keep the temps up. That's just me though.

I like red lights at night so I can see my BCI's at their most active time of the day, not so much for heat.
the black light issue has come up in a few different posts, so I made a new post just for it. it's in health issues forum. I know personally when I look at a regular blacklight for too long my eyes hurt, and I can blink! -Juggalo

Don't know any harms about the blacklights, but I just got a reptile one to test out and so far I haven't seen any harm and it seems to be tinted and doesn't hurt my eyes. Either way, my royal is pretty active at night, always climbing and doing things you will never see during the day.
