Mega Ray floods
Have any of you used these and if so, what do you think. I was thinking of ordering the 100w UV/heat flood for my monitor. I like how it is the bumpy bulb, so the light spreads more.

Re: Mega Ray floods
Couldn't hurt though, I've heard good things about the megarays. If nothing else it'll bring his colors out a bit more.

Re: Mega Ray floods
Unfortunately mega ray has a corner on the market so customer service is a bit lacking, and the bulbs barely last 5 months. Recently they have gone to new ballasts which seem to work well , but the bulbs severely weaken after 4-5 months. When you have large reptiles you can not put a shelf 12 inches away from the bulb or the reptile won't fit between the two.
nicolenadia: If you are going to use u.v. be sure to get a solar meter and check outside readings, then be sure your reptile is getting those readings or the bulbs may be providing too little u.v.

Re: Mega Ray floods
So....What should I use instead. I also feel that UVB won't hurt, and perhaps, might help bone density. I guess since Monitors do not need the regular dose of UVB, if the UVB starts lacking in the bulb, than whats the harm? Do you mean that the bulb stops working completely after 4-5 months, or the UVB levels decrease?
What about Powersuns?

Re: Mega Ray floods
Sometimes the bulbs stop completely, or just lose about 70% of their value. Mine used to put out 250 uW at 24 inches. Now about 10 months later they put out about 30uW at 24 inches. So plan on buying a new one every year.
Yes there is no harm in less u.v. levels it is just a bit of a rip off. Since monitors do not need it, we have put off buying new ones until I do more research and we have money burning a hole in our pockets.
I can not advice you what to get, how ever I have a few e-mails from herpetologists and what they use, I also have a few debates about this you can read over. I have only used the megarays, but I have only provided u.v. for the last year or 2. I spent about 6-8 months researching it first.
