I've got a question about the red heat bulbs made by Zoo Med. I needed a 40 watt night bulb for Jose (Rosy Boa) and for Seneca (Leo)but the only brand that makes this wattage is Zoo Med. So I bought two last night and brought them home. They get the tanks to the right temp but they seem REALLY bright. I know the theory is that they can't see red light, and my reptiles didn't seem bothered by it. I only noticed that their pupils did constrict whenI put these bulbs on. Does anyone have an opinion about these bulbs? I'm wondering if I should exchange them or not. Thanks

Which Zoomed red bulbs did you get?
Did you get the infrared heat bulb or the regular red nocturnal heat lamp?

Good questions.
The red bulbs, from everything I have read, are NOT supposed to hurt their eyes.
As for dilation/constriction etc, I haven't noticed this but I rarely use red any more.
I use red when there isn't any black ones in the stores.
But typically I stick with the dark ones.
Seems that most people use the red and moon lights so they can see their herps at night, but depending where it's set up at, then I would either have to swap lights, close the door or other things cause I can't sleep with any lights on.

Here's another one..
When the bad guys shoot at Superman, the bullets bounce off.
When they throw the gun at him, he ducks.
Why?

I'm fairly certain it's the regular red not the infared because it's the only one that comes in 40 watt. It's pictured here.
Red Bulb

I hear you about the sleeping thing. I had to throw a towel over the front of Seneca's cage because it's so bright. My mother says my room looks like a pricey lady house. Err..brothel...can I say brothel? I can live with the light only because the temps are just right now but if there is reason to think it hurts their eyes, I will switch to an ESU 50watt and get a dimmer for Seneca. (Jose's is already on a dimmer)

I just put the 100 W nightlight bulb in my boas cage. It is really bright! Good heat though. They don't seem to be bothered by the light. But nothing seems to bother my crew. They are good little urmmm Not so little snakies.

It is kinda neat to be able to see them so well at night. And I do feel like a Satan worshiper now! I think I'll probably keep them. At least when I move out they wont be in the same room that I sleep anymore.

I love them. I've been using the same bulbs for years, I think theyre great. My whole apartment is lit up red at night! lol, there's no escaping it. I'm very used to it though. It would be very weird to go to bed in an all dark house lol. I've heard it said many times that my apartment looks like a pricey lady house from the outside windows lol. Keep um! -Juggalo
