I have been meaning to replace my old analog thermostat on my boa cage with my Big Apple digital perportional thermostat, and get a new digital perportional thermostat for my ETB's tank. Let me run down a few things:

DPT2000:
Digital Display - much more acurate when it comes to adjusting the temp. than on an analoge dial (plus it glows green and looks cool, hehe).
Battery Back-up - your settings are never lost.
Replacable Probe - if it ever goes it's nice to know you can unplug it and pop a new one in
Temp Drop - it's built into this baby, unlike the Big Apple it does not need a separate timer, it's all in this unit.
Power - handles up to 500W, same as Big Apples.

Big Apple:
Analog Dial - with some tweeking it get's the job done.
Back up - it does not need a backup if the power fails, but if you using the temp drop feature you need to have a digital timer attached to it or else the timer will stop with the power and your cycles will be thrown off
Probe - it's not replacable, pray it does not break.
Power - handles 500W, but has a power booster option for up to 1000W.

All in all for the extra $24 go with a DPT 2000 from eherp. It's worth the extra money. I still like my Big Apple one, but it most likely will be the last one I buy. The DPT2000 also has a huge heatsink in it and does not "buzz" when the power going to the heat souce is very low like on the Big Apple.

The DPT2000 get's a perfect ten from me!

Thanks for the review man. I've been looking for a good thermostat. I'll be sure to check it out.

Hey I was wondering about how much watts would one 4 ' boaphile cage take up with it's heattape? I know you probably wouldnt know but maybe an estimation of how many cages that one could handle? I'm searching through all this thermostat info lookin for a good buy! Also, how do you attatch multiple plugs into this or any thermometers? Thanks.

Hi Shrub!

If you get Jeff to install the special low wattage tape that he uses on his cages and racks, one thermostat would handle a LOT of cages. We are only talking about 17W per cage here.

BUT...

I have even better news. Sometime Very Soon (like maybe this week if I can get my act together), we are going to be offering a line of high quailty industrial strength thermostats!

These Also have digital displays, they are easy to program, and they handle up to 1500 Watts of power right out of the box. The come pre-installed with a 6 outlet powerstrip.

I know I know. Shameless self promotion.

Well since I wrote this comparison my DPT2000 has failed twice. The first time I thought it was bad luck, but a second time... It's not eherp's fault, they have been vary good about taking them back, as the manufacturer has made faulty units. If you have purchased one and are currently using it, be carefull as it may fail. I had one go with no indication but looking at my digital thermometer and seeing the heating element was getting no power and the second time was followed by a buzzing noise. Just wanted to let people know to look out.
