Giant spider snapped eating bird in backyard near Cairns
I'm no 'spider-guy,' but this is a pretty neat picture and info on the Golden Orb Weaver spider ( Nephila ssp), snapped recently in Australia.

We had these critters in Okinawa when I lived there, and we called them 'Banana Spiders' locally. Yes, they are monstrous, intimidating, and can even be aggressive and chase after you. They loved making GIGANTIC webs outside my bedroom window at night, and I'd wake up to this scary alien-looking spider, BAM, right there staring at me in the morning...yikes. Pretty neat though.

I have to get one of those Giant Orb Weavers! I have a pet regular sized orb weaver, she makes very impressive webs and never turns down a meal

Re: Giant spider snapped eating bird in backyard near Cairns
dude, that is messed up!!!! How big is that spider? I'm hoping that is a smaller bird and that it just makes the spider look gigantic! I mean, that spider looks to be like a foot long or some crap...

Re: Giant spider snapped eating bird in backyard near Cairns
I saw some about the size of a human hand, fingers stretched out and all...The one in the pic is probably around that size, maybe even a little bigger...the bird looks about the size of a Chickadee or House Sparrow maybe.

Re: Giant spider snapped eating bird in backyard near Cairns
Pretty sure if I even ran into a web that housed one of those things that I'd be long dead from a heart-attack before anything else. @__@;
Good god that's horrific..! And there's no worse feeling than walking into a web and not knowing where the spider that lives in it, is..! Poor bird D:
