Eucatylus produces an oil which is toxic
Eucatylus produces an oil which is toxic. In small does it will not kill but long term ingestion kills animals. Koala bears are one of the few animals that can digest it. Certain cockatoo species will eat the green shoots when they have an infection due to its ability to kill bacteria.
Eucalyptus oil can be used to irritate snakes and keep them away from houses and tents. Poured around these dwellings it irritates the snake's tongues and stops them from entering the location.
If you ever go into a grove of Bluegum trees you will notice that there are far less insects there and I have never found a reptile in one of these groves. Lizards do not live under he bark either. This also applies to Black wattle. Animals sleeping under that bark actually have their skins tanned while they are alive. Obviously they will die from this eventually.
In a nutshell rather try woods that are proven to be non toxic and the best of these is oak. Oak shavings are even used as horse fodder. Oak leaves make a very nice and safe substrate too.
