New species found in suriname!
PARAMARIBO Suriname — A frog with fluorescent purple markings and 12 kinds of dung beetles were among two dozen new species discovered in the remote plateaus of eastern Suriname, scientists said Monday.
The expedition was sponsored by two mining companies hoping to excavate the area for bauxite, the raw material used to make aluminum, and it was unknown how the findings would affect their plans.
Scientists discovered the species during a 2005 expedition led by the U.S.-based nonprofit Conservation International in rainforests and swamps about 80 miles southeast of Paramaribo, the capital of the South American country, organization spokesman Tom Cohen said.
Among the species found were the atelopus frog, which has distinctive purple markings; six types of fish; 12 dung beetles, and one ant species, he said.
The scientists called for better conservation management in the unprotected, state-owned areas, where hunting and small-scale illegal mining is common.
The study was financed by Suriname Aluminum Company LLC and BHP Billiton Maatschappij Suriname.
Suriname Aluminum, which has a government concession to explore gold in the area, will include the data in its environmental assessment study, said Haydi Berrenstein, a Conservation International official in Suriname, which borders Brazil, Guyana and French Guiana.
About 80 percent of Suriname is covered with dense rainforest. Thousands of Brazilians and Surinamese are believed to work in illegal gold mining, creating mercury pollution that has threatened the health of Amerindians and Maroons in Suriname's interior

Re: New species found in suriname!
Tompkins insists he'll eventually return the land to both governments to be preserved as nature reserves or parks, but will hold onto it for now "as a very good example of what private conservation can do."
But this might change because Argentina wants to put a road through it!!!!! Also many lawmakers in both countries are trying to make it illegal for foriegners to buy large amounts of land!!!!

Re: New species found in suriname!
But someone is almost always trying to take it away. It's a losing battle for now. How many people do you know who are willing to give up anything to help the environment??

I gave up meat
I traded in my pathfinder for a corrolla and started working for a company that had a active telecommuting policy
I take short showers
I planted indigenous plants in my yard that didnt need excess water
I have a HUGE compost pile
I recycle just about everything
I grow my own food (alot of it anyways)
I started a "lights out" campaign at work since everyone left their desklights on when they left
its not what one person can do overall, but if everyone makes little sacrifices here and there it compounds to make a big difference.

Re: New species found in suriname!
I have done a few things also. mostly working with my family getting them to cut down keep lights off, using lower wattage bulbs, RECYCLE ( Do you know tabs are worth more than the cans) we hunt most of our food and most of my family members have gardens. I am trying to get my cousin to get a biodeisel truck, my dads runs off of it allready. None of us are rich enough to go off the grid, yet I plan to in the future.
I still have my doubts about the future of the planet most people don't seem to care!!!

Re: New species found in suriname!
most people don't care because it means serious changes in how they live their life.
But what happens when its gone beyond the point of no return and EVERYONE is affected and things are much worse off.
and be careful on bio diesel, that is a double edged sword, lots of rainforest is getting clear cut to grow palm's and other plants for biodiesel.
I wish I could go off the grid, it just really hard..
can you imagine a billion people going off the grid... the powers the be would never stand for it.
