What kind of fish is this?
A strange looking sea creature washed up on the shores of Cayman Brac this weekend.
Layman Scott found the fish while walking along the beach early Sunday morning. It is roughly thirty inches long, more than half of which is a long, eel-like tail attached to a fish body. It has pale pink scales, pectoral fins, a dorsal fin and a small feathery fin on its belly.
Local fishermen say they have not seen a creature quite like this before. It has boney bristles all along its spine, right down to the tip of its tail and small sharp teeth, which curve slightly inward.
The sighting has been reported to the Department of Environment, but meanwhile, The Bracker and Little Caymanian is inviting readers to see if they can identify this fish.

With the look of it it kind of looks like one of those deep sea dwelling fish. They get really freaky looking.

Yeah, I agree with Brian. It's unusual for something like that to make it to a beach without being eaten by something. If a storm or methane gas release or volcanic activity or something churned it up from the deep, it would likely have died from having it's swim bladder overexpanded and it wouldn't have been able to go back down. But, I'm surprised it made it to shore.

I remember seeing fish like that when I read oceanography books as a kid...they had light -like appendages growing out of their heads and some pretty fierce looking teeth

That fish with the light is the female, the male (which is way smaller) will actually burrow itself into the female and become a sort of parasite in order to breath.
I read that somewhere about the fish, pretty interesting stuff

Some species of angler fish do that shane. They don't do it to breath. They bite on and fuse with her and actually grow a membrane with connected blood vessels and share a blood supply...thus becoming one. His only purpose then is to drop sperm as she drops eggs. Any nutrients he needs is supplied from her through the already enriched blood. This evolutional oddity insures that she will always have a mate handy to fertilize her eggs in a sparse habitat where there is no light and anglers don't exactly school down there so finding a mate at the right time would be quite a challenge.

Kind of like bar hopping speed dating then.
Well except they go about in a rather unconventional way.

It looks like an Angler Fish except longer. Angler's are the luring ones with the lights. It was in Finding Nemo ^_^ That thing is creepy...

update:
Hi Nicole,
I’ve made an inquiry at the Department of Environment in Cayman and if anyone knows this contact would or will. I’ll will keep you posted.
Swimming in Little Cayman just went to the bottom of my priority list ...
As always, hope all is well.
Best.
John
