hey you saltwater aquarium people!
well we have a 100 gallon aquarium laying around and my dad has been wanting to get into keeping saltwater fish, coral, etc. we have been on the past serveral hours looking at fish, researching ph levels, sg levels, dKH, etc etc. we have found fish and coral we would like to use that are compatiable with one another in tolerane/aggression as well as in the tank requirements. we have been looking at filtration systems, pumps, testing kits, etc and think he have picked out some good stuff.
however we do have a couple questions,
we were wondering what would be the best, in your opinion air pump, wavemaker, protein skimmer, and what test kit do you use? we have found several test kits, but is there a specific one you would recomend? also we were told to get water conditioners, but which ones, when i looked there were several different ones.
also we were looking at a FilStar Canister Filter XP3 has any had any experince with these or does it look like a good filtration system? also were looking at the Instant Ocean Salt Mix. would this work well with the coral and animals?
we are looking at
ph = 8.1-8.4
dKH = 8-12
temps of 72-78*F
sg = 1.023-1.025
any additional recources and stuff would be great as well!
Thanks in advanced!
-Kody

Re: hey you saltwater aquarium people!
Kody,
I would use salifert test kits. I have found them to be the most accurate by far. For water conditioning, I would recommend chemi-pure. Best stuff on the market. Make sure to let your tank run for 6 - 8 weeks before adding livestock. Water needs to cycle properly. Personally, I would use a sump with a refugium for this tank. I am not a fan of canister filters on a reef tank. For this, you would use a 30g tank and you can easily build your own. There are plenty of DIY manuals out there.
