Brown Banded Bamboo Shark
Has anyone seen these?!
I like them.. im thinking im going to get one soon, as soon as i can get all my research in and all the setup stuff.. i have a 100 gal long that will last it a while, while its young, but will probably get a 250 or 300 gal before its over.. they stay relatively small.. about 40 inches adult size.. does anyone know anything about thier care? or anyone that keeps them i may be able to talk to about them?

Re: Brown Banded Bamboo Shark
I just know they need a LOT of tank space. That hundred gallon is way too small....he's going to need 3 or time that when he's big. They need a lot of open space to cruise, and I'm not sure what you can really house with them. How much saltwater experience do you have? Their water parameters have to be perfect.

Re: Brown Banded Bamboo Shark
oh i wasnt planning on keeping him in it.. i was getting one still kinda small.. and that would just be temporary until i can get my hands on a 300+ gal, which i will have custom made to suite its needs as far as the space it needs
i dont have a whole lot of experience with saltwater tanks but i dont doubt for a second that i wouldnt be able to handel it.. when i find something out im usually very anal about going by the books as far as care and stuff go, to keep my animals happy and healthy.

Re: Brown Banded Bamboo Shark
Just make sure you can keep your salinity and all that good stuff stable. You ought to have your tank up and running for a good 6 months or so so that it is nice and stable before you get a shark.

Re: Brown Banded Bamboo Shark
IMO I would get some other stuff before getting a shark to get a hang of saltwater tanks. Ive seen someone keep this in a 180 (too small IMO)
Two bamboo shars, 1 panther grouper, and an eel. This tank was too smal for them but Ive seen it done.
For one bamboo shark 180 will be a minimum and they will do fine in it with a LOT of water changes.

Good lord, did they have any idea how big a panther grouper can get? Too crowded IMO. *shakes head*

Totally agree, and these were all FULL grown adults too!
You can find a video of it on youtube.

Beats me but the only reason this has worked for him is because he has like NO rock in his tank so its all swimming space. He is lucky that the sharks havnt killed eachother because of no hiding. These are bottom dwelling sharks that feed in low depth and tight spaces. If you are going to get one make sure to give them lots of hiding spots and tight spots with ROCKS!

Re: Brown Banded Bamboo Shark
400 gallon minimum for them.
Here is a brownbanded (hatched it myself) and a whitespotted bamboo shark.
Lots of open surface area with a few hiding places. They stay toward the bottom and middle unless it's feeding time.
Feeding with tongs for the brownbanded, by hand for the whitespotted.
Fresh raw shrimp, scallops, and shark formula frozen foods are great to feed.
They make a mess and need excellent filtration. Setting up a 125 gallon sump with a very good skimmer would be recommended.
Personally I prefer the whitespotted but they are harder to get a hold of and are much more expensive since they are not as common as the brownbanded and usually need to be special ordered.
Egg in the reef tank to hatch before it was moved (right under the purple tang).
Brownbanded out of the egg.
Whitespotted

Re: Brown Banded Bamboo Shark
I would make sure the tank is at least 8 feet long and have a big sump to keep plenty of live rock in. They get big and strong and will knock over live rock, and if you have it stacked high they can hurt themselves. Also, no copper medications and this will seriously harm them or even kill them.

Re: Brown Banded Bamboo Shark
Hey, Iguana and Fish Guy, check the dates on the threads you're posting on. Some of them are over a year old. Not that there's anything wrong with that...just thought you'd want to know. Some of the OP's are not around any more.
Welcome to the site, BTW!

Hey, thanks. I didn't realize they were that old, I was just checking out all these threads and responded in those I found interesting. Thanks for pointing this out to me. I'll be more cogniscent of the age of the threads.

Re: Brown Banded Bamboo Shark
LOL, when I first joined, I pulled up threads from 2005. Old threads can still be useful and entertaining.
