The beneficial bacteria is not in the water, it lives on the surface area. Gravel and crushed coral are just nitrate factories. You will find your tank will have elevated nitrate levels because of the gravel trapping detrius and fish waste. A sand bed (deep) has anaerobic bacteria for added filtration and has the ability to process the fish waste and detrius. Live sand also has ph, ca, and alk buffers to maintain proper levels. |
