Our New Hobby-Sea Horses!(Pics-Video)
Well since my mom saw sea horses in a pet store when she was little, she instantly fell in love. She thought they were mystical creatures, she had no idea they were real. One night I came home and she had the computer on a sea horse caresheet.
I didnt think she was serious until we went out and spent thousand dollars on the tank and pumps, and more money on everything else. We had some damsels in there but had to take them out after a month once our baby sea horses came in, which was yesterday.
We bought 4 yesterday, and then today another pet shop called and let us know they had two yellow kuda sea horses in so between my mom clients she went to pick those up too. lol
Then last night she bought five more online and they are being shipped out monday.
They are awesome and cute! We only have pics of the 4 black spotted kuda right now and will have better pics of the rest in a few weeks when santa brings me my new camera!
Tell me what you think! :]
enjoy!

Sorry crappy pics from camera phone. But you get the picture ;]

That's awsome! The aquarium in chatanooga had a special seahorse display, and I went to see it when I was up there on vacation. They're facinating little critters. If you want to see something really cool, look up leafy or weedy sea dragons. They had those there too, and they were just amazing!

Even coral is hard to deal with lol! Yes very expensive! Total with all the fish, test kits salt salt water we bought and decor probably 3k Everytime my mom goes to the fish store or online she ends up spending atleast $200.00
I wish I had that kinda money to put towards my boa's.

A LOT!!!!!!!! oh my..... we have had them less then a week and we have to do test on the water to test the pH and nitrate and if these chemicals are to out of wack it can kill them. Sea horses are in the expert fish and are extremely hard to care for but once you get everything started it gets easier.
They are easy to breed though, 3 week gestation.
You have to have your tank up and running for atleast a month to get the biological filter in the tank to build up so pretty much its own little eco system. Its been hard work but it pays off at the end of the day.

Re: Our New Hobby-Sea Horses!(Pics-Video)
Cameron, I have always loved sea horses. I find them beautiful, odd, and fascinating. And don't they have some bizarre reversed mating and courting rituals? Like isn't is the male that gets pregnant, or something like that? I would love to hear more about this if you wouldn't mind posting in this thread.
Sadly, they are also farmed in certain areas (I want to say the Philippines?), dried out, and sold as some sort of supplements. So sad.

Actualy pretty much every asian country use them as a medicine. They are suppose to cure urinary infections and a few other things, so they dry them out in the sun and sell them in large pack of anywere from 10 to 100.
Sadly as of a month ago every seahorse in the wild was pronouced endagered :[ They have made it illegal to bring wild caught sea horse to America now. Sadly some of the most coolest sea horses are ownly in captivity.
As for breeding the male breeds with the female while she is still caring the eggs and infertiles then I think about a week later she passes them to him and takes off... lol He then carries them for two more weeks, on that day he will start having contractions and jerky movements. After another and another baby sea horses will be shooting out.
My mom just recently bought a breeding pair and the male might have some babies in there if were lucky if not soon!
But the good news stargazer that on christmass day I will post new pics of our new collection of 11 seahorses! Just for you since you like them so much! I get my new camera then so they will be nice pics!
So look for the post [Sea Horse pics for Stargazer]
Have a good day and a great Holiday season all!

Re: Our New Hobby-Sea Horses!(Pics-Video)
I did not realize they are endangered. Very sad indeed. I am looking forward to seeing the babies. Are they related to any other species of marine life? They are so unique and mysterious.

They are related to pipe fish, they are fish themselfs they just look different.
Yes indeed they are very unique! They are awesome and there are tons of different kinds of them, there are even dwarfs!
I just hope people stop pulling them out of the wild though. I dont want the only one we have are in captivity.
