Growl!
i would of never thought... well..
last night, my husband wakes me up around 12:30am and tells me somthing in the house is burning. so, i jump up, and go smell around. it was very very faint, but after searching and unpluging everything, and doing it half asleep, we had no luck of finding anything, so, we went back to bed. my baby wakes me up at 4 am to feed, and i didnt smell anything, so i fed the baby, and went back to bed. later that day, my husband comes home and 2 of our fish in our tank are dead, two clowns we have had for over a year. we have been extreamly successful in keeping everything in our tank. so, ofcourse, we freaked out.. checked everything, and everything was ok. but, upon doing so, when my husband stuck his hand in there, he got a shock... the power head in the tank went and blew, then sent an electral current through the tank, killing two of our clowns, and the shrimp. the other fish and corals are fine, but, hes not happy... our fish tank made the living room, and now there are no fish bummer

Wow, sorry that happened! That's kinda creepy, though.
I had a close call a few years back... I had my turtles outside in a pond and I had just got them set up. Well I was just moments away from putting my hand in there to make some adjustments to their basking spot when the pump blew and started shooting up bubbles of smoke. Scared the heck out of me and gave me some serious heebeejeebees for awhile, but luckily it didn't shock my turtles. I think it had some device to make it shut off immediately or something when it blew like that. It was one of those Little Giant black pumps. I've had issues with more than just one of those, and I don't use those pumps anymore, I just don't trust them. I don't know what kind of a motor they used, but now I use those Mag Drive pumps that have a magnet prop to pump the water and I've never had any problems with them.

its horrible how that stuff happens. that night when we were trying to figure out what happened, we were smelling the filter, which was brand new, and i thought it was the skimmer for a while, until we tested it and it came up clear.. im just glad everything else in the tank is ok.. weirded me out though.. i could see if we had an ammonia spike or somthing, but water tests came out clean. im still upset by it, but find relief knowing it wasnt somthing bad on my part, like neglecting it.. i just did a partial water change, and added salt, and that day had tested everything later and it came out cool, i was proud of myself..lol.. only to get up a couple days later to find out my power head had gone bad... the strange things that happen..

The power head probably had some faulty wiring or something or wasn't sealed good enough and water leaked into it. It happens. Was it a power head made for saltwater? If so, it was just probably something faulty with it. You'd think they'd test these things before they ship them out and sell them.
