I rescued this nile monitor a week or so ago... hated people, refused to be handled... I worked with him every single day, and he was finally starting to warm up to me - and then I found him a new home. I miss him already... sucks, but I just don't have the space to build an entire room for a nile water monitor right now. =)

Also, a couple weeks ago... I got this turtle in, big old TX river cooter... who was completely unable to submerge or swim, floating on one side - coated in leeches, bleeding, rather nasty infection. I brought her home, cleaned her up... and after 2 weeks of pretty much constant antiseptic cleaning she's ready to go back to her lake. *sniff* At least I'll get my tub back. =)

a job well done. At least you let them go knowing you they are in better condition than when they came to you. Next time you go to that lake and see her swimming along will make it all worth the while.

They are both really good looking animals... That cooter sure does look like it is expecting something from ya though.. Maybe a finger or two??

I've never actually worked with a nile monitor from birth to adulthood, but I'd venture to guess about 5 years before they hit their full potential size. Still, at a year old, and larger than an adult iguana, they have the potential for some hefty damage. I look like I got caught in a fight with a weed wacker right now because of all the scratches on me from handling him. And niles are generally pretty ill tempered, and even after working with them - if you ignore them for too long, they go right back to being defensive and bitter. Not an animal to be taken lightly - thats why I was so careful finding him a home with someone who know what to expect. I'm not sure how old he was, the original owner didn't even know he was a nile monitor, so getting info out of her was pointless.

Anyway, thanks guys,
Rav

That's one of the things we deal with in rescues a lot of the time.. The lack of knowledge on the hx of the specific animal... Usually the people I talk to at least know what species of animal they are dealing with. These people couldn't tell me any more than it was some kind of lizard that liked their cat's food.
