This is what I ran across this past Saturday, leaving the house....
Unfortunately for it, it lost the odds over a head on collision or the ditch.
I di try what I could to keep it from getting hit, but it was a little tall and the frame of the car managed to hit the top of the shell, forcing the bottom onto the road while shifting the top in the new direction instantly severing the top and bottoms of the shell...
I also had to travel over 1/2 a mile in order to turn around to check out the damage and it may well have gotten hit again by another passing motorist.
Needless to say, it was well beyond saving at first glance and there was really no decision as to euthanize or not.

Man, that is tough. Turtles are usually pretty resilient and you'd be surprised what they can recover from. In fact, in Raleigh at the Reptile and amphibian day, I saw two box turtles that survived similar damage shell wise, but not the internal trauma this guy took. Bummer

Aawww deffinetly did the right thing eddie Poor mudlick.. Thats what we call turtles that cross the roads and dont make it.. Very sad.. kids are always saying gota stop mom and pick it up.. Most the times we can save them from getting hit , other times we are not so lucky to get to them befour they do.. We usualy take the ones we can help get off the road and turn them loose in a pond- swamp thats out in the middle of the woods where there is no roads.. poor thing..
