Just wanted to say hi to you all. My name is Allison, and I am taking in snake rescues in Seattle. I just took in my 9th and 10th snakes yesterday, so you can probably tell I'm a little new to rescuing, just a few months now. But I love snakes, I've owned them for years, and I can't stand to keep seeing them abused and sick going without care.
That's about it, just wanted to introduce myself.
Can I ask for advice here too, sor should I take that to the forums?
One of my rescues yesterday was a Rough Scale Boa, The guy said he ate a live fuzzy about 5 months ago and hasn't eaten anything since. He tried rat, gerbil, and several other types of fuzzies, but it didn't work. My first instinct was to force feed, but when I saw this snake, he doesn't seem lethargic or too thin. Any opinions?
Thanks!
Allison

Hi Dragonfire, and welcome!!
If the snake is not too thin, I would hold off on force feeding it. Maybe she just needs a little settling down, and good ol' fashioned TLC!!

Welcome. If it hasn't eaten in 5 months and doesn't seem to be too thin. I would say the temps were too low and it ispossibly in brumation. As I recall they require some high temps around 90 on the hot side. Plus if you just got it in , it still may need to settle in. Also what are you keeping it on(substrate)?

I was not impressed with this guys care for his snakes at all. He called me saying he also did rescues but had more than he could handle, so I took agreed to take a 9 ft burm with a respitory problem and this little rough scale boa. The burm was housed inside one of those glass display cases with a red tail boa (on newspaper that looked filthy) and the boa was in with a Dumerils and a Ball python in a little 10 or 15 gallon tank.
Those were his only snakes. He had 5 and I took two. I think he's one of those people who starts rescues to get pets, not willing to take and care for sick animals.
So right now I have it in my snake room, which the whole room is set to 85. He's in a 1 1/2' x 1 1/2' x 3' tall cage which I filled about 1/2 way up with some carefresh cardboad type bedding and he's burrowed down in that, I haven't seen him come back up for the last couple days. but I figure he's setting himself up in his new space and I don't want to dig him out and torment him any further. I figured I'll catch him coming up for food one of these nights and try feeding him again.
Do you think I should try to check on him before that?
Thanks
Allison

I hope you don't have any of your own personal snakes in this room. You really need to quarantine the new rescued babies.
Good luck with them!

I read the first post and skimmed through the rest (long day, sorry). But for the boa. i would make sure that the current husbandry is optimal and try feeding him. The probem may have been a problem with the former owner's husbandry.

I don't have any "personal" snake right now. I sold them to pay for cages and vet bills for the rescues. I figure the rescues are my personal snakes until they are deemend healthy, and maybe even longer, space and $ permitting
Thanks everyone for the warm welcomes!
