Went on a pick up today. Was supposed to be for one snake..got there and was told there are actually two. Oh well..

Weeell, we knew beforew we got there that the snakes had mites and hadn't been taken care of for like 3 weeks time..UGH. BUT what we found said otherwise of course. The cage looked as though it hadn't been tended in like at least 1 moth or two..UGH. Took us some time to even get the cage opened [sliding doors seemed to have vapored seemed to have vapored shut]. In the cage we found a 9-10' burmese python and also a lil boa/bci about 2 1/2'er.
YUP, BOTH were being housed together. arghhhh The cage was FILTHY, and that would be putting it nicely even. There was no water, no heat, no humidity, no substrate.....arghh Ya ever wanna just kill someone??? Couldn't begin to tell ya how much restraint it takes to NOT do such sometimes...
BOTH snakes of course were INFESTED with mites ! [ The burm is being housed AWAY from any/all reptiles under my control..colection and rescue/rehabs ..NOT even in the same building.. and there are no other reptiles in the building the burm is in either. NOT taking any chances with the degree of infestation going on with the mites it has]
We were told that the burm was a bit on the nasty side, but we found otherwise .. it never so much as even hissed at us at all. So much for bringing the gloves and hooks hehe.

BOTH snakes were not only mite infested but also severely dehydrated, under weight, starving basically, retained shed...etc. and the boa was also emaciated and lethargic..UGH.

Anyways.. One was an albino burmese python... 9-10'er

Pics on this page of it..
BURM RESCUE

The other was a BOA/BCI.. about 2 1/2'er.... Unfortunately this one died enroute home in my husband's arms

BOA/BCI

Oh and did I mention that the burm's diet consisted of 6 turkey drum sticks like every 3 weks or so..when it was being fed ???

Sorry to hear about the boa Lori. You gotta wonder how the Burm actually lived to grow to that size on his diet. Well at least you have him now and we know he will be well taken care of. You have more restaint than I do I would have said or done something. Good luck with the burm.

It's such a shame that those two were so poorly cared for (more like, not cared for) .... what are some people THINKING when they own animals?!

Hmmmm.... do I hear mandatory reading and education prior to all reptile purchases. How about a fifty question quiz prior to taking the reptile home..... that would eliminate 3/4 of the idiots that walk in and try to buy animals like that. They would not want to take the time to be able to pass the test, it might save some poor animals like that boa.
That is ridiculous.... can't you report that to the local ASPCA as animal cruelty?

Hmmm.....
Looks like the burm has a shed issue going on along with the underweight and hydration probs, but hard to say from just a pic some times...

And as for the boa, that sux.

Some one mentioned pre-education for snake owners.
Well, a lot of times people get animals from stores where all the employees know is basic phone techniques and they give bad info all the time.
the problem is when the new owners believe that the care tips given them are all they need to know. Some pet store employees are so misinformed that they tell customers that reptiles don't need checkups, treatments for common ailments and most can't tell you what any of the common ailments are either.

Good luck Lori.
The burm looks like he will be nice once he is healthy and well-fed again. Should I stop feeding turkey legs to my burm??? Darn I guess she can eat some ground beef now......UGH what were those people thinking?? Sorry to hear about the boa, I hope at least it knew you came to help
If the burm needs a new home when he is all healthy, I'm all ears......

YUP, Eddie that would be the retained shed problem I mentioned. We seem to have a grasp on that one atm though. It's coming off np in soaks.

Umm..umm.. I guess I forgot to mention this one lil thing.... These snakes were owned by someone who works in a pet store from what I was told. [ OH NO! Umm..It is DEFINATELY being looked into atm ! That was brought up by the person whom handed the info on these two to me once I informed them of the &quot;situation&quot; that was actually found. Of course.. what was found was NOT what had been given in relation to this rescue at all. The person who I got the info from for the rescue pickup is also someone who is VERY involved in herping and in a position to do just that also.

<TABLE BORDER=0 ALIGN=CENTER WIDTH=85%><TR><TD><font class="pn-sub">Quote:</font><HR></TD></TR><TR><TD><FONT class="pn-sub"><BLOCKQUOTE>If the burm needs a new home when he is all healthy, I'm all ears...... </BLOCKQUOTE></FONT></TD></TR><TR><TD><HR></TD></TR></TABLE>

I'll keep that in mind. I have your app on file also even already. This one once ready for adoption shall be a combined effort in it's placement along with the person who I got the rescue/pick up from as well. He'll be fully involved in it's placement. I also have a list of people that are willing to take in burms already that may be considered for this one. I'll keep you posted though.

I think we NEED to start with the employees FIRST in the area of education. How else would an employee be able to give out correect info . if they haven't a freaking clue themselves even ...arghhhh

Well, what I was trying to say was, If you can see it in the pic then it's not too good....

As for pet store training, hehe, ya think they are gonna put $$ into training the people that are there just for a lil while?
Too much turn over for the expense for most shops.
Even printing up care sheets is too much of an expense for some....

Hey Eddie.. Which pic are you refering to and where actually in regards to the retained shed thing. I took the pics after some of the shed came off even and was still floating in the water tub. BTW.. If it is the head area at all [ arghh] , like the dark areas.. then it is not shed at all. that's a MAJOR colony of mites that you'd be seeing. ARGHHHHHHHH
BUT On the better side.. I have now managed to &quot;work&quot; most of them outta there in that area at this point even for her.

Umm.. Like in this pic here..

All that dark area is mites , not shed..UGH.
Is that what you meant ?
