Some times we get the call we don't want....
I got one of them today about an eastern box turtle that had its head hit by a car on the interstate.
It had so much damage that it was one I knew that had to be put out of its suffering.
The entire top portion and upper jaw were beyond any kind of repair and it really suprised me that he was still hanging on when he got here this afternoon.
Turtle head shot.
Head shot 2.

That is a sad thing eddie. It is good that you can do these though and at least offer the poor turtle the decency of stoping his suffering.
Good man.

Eddie told me while I was at work that it was on the way here and when I talk to him a couple of hours after that he told me he was having to put it out of it's misery! It is so sad that people tdo these things and don't even care!
Bensnacks, In my opinion about compassion I think there are very few of those kind of people left in this world and if you find those kind of people you are very lucky!

Some people really don't care, but I think that some just can't bare to stop b/c it would be too painful for them. If they drive on they can pretend it never happened. Basiclly they are cowards.
Just my opinion though.

One other thing I notice (I do a fair share of road crusing just to see whats out)
and I have nearly run over animals (mainly very small snakes/lizards and frogs)
because they are sooooo small you can barely see them.
I know not everyone pays that good of attention to the road when they are driving,
so they may not of even seen the animal they hit, or it looks like something else, like trash or tire rubber, automotive belts, etc ... so they disregard it.
but dogs/cats and other larger animals, even big turtles, there is just no excuse not to stop,
if you hit it, I think you should bear the responsibility of moving it off of the road, or at least contacting animal control or proper authorities to come remove the animal and deal with it appropriately.
I cant count how many times I had to move animals off the road after seeing them hit, and the driver just kept on going.
Its sad, but I dont see any change in that type of behavior anytime soon.
Oh well, at least the turtle in this case has its dignity.
Better to go in caring hands then by another tire.

Heck sometimes they don't even stop when they hit people, so why would they bother with an animal? There was an article in the paper today about some drunk in L.A. that had like a .20 blood alcohol level. He hit a woman and her three kids at 40 mph or more, killed all three, kept going, and hit a tree. He ran from the van, came back to get his registration so the cops couldn't track him down, and ended up cornered by witnesses in a phone booth, where they suspect he called his wife, because moments later she called to report the van stolen!
