Got a call to remove a snake, and guess what it was???
I was on my way to have a drink with my wife this afternoon and got a call. The first thing the guy said was "I got your number from the San Antonio police department". That kind of worried me until he went on to say that he had a snake at his house. I am a member of the South Texas Herp association and am on the rescue/removal team for the North East part of San Antonio. But it was weird to get a call at the end of December for a snake. Well the guy discribed it (black with yellow splotches)and it didn't sound like anything local so I got his address and dropped off the wife and headed over. The man was redoing his enclosed back orch and the floor was treated 2x6 like you would see on a deck. He had been removing some boards and saw the snake. He then tried to get it with a broomstick with a noose on the end and failed. The snake had moved to another section of the flooring and wedged itself in. So the man had blocked it's escape with a board until I got there.
When I got there I assessed the situation and removed the board. Well as soon as I saw the snakes side I knew what it was and grabbed hold. I then pulled the snake out of the space under the floor where it was wedged in and what do you know, I had a 3ft. Ball Python.
It was quite cold and I packed it in a bag and headed home to get it into a tub and some warmer weather.
So here he/she ( I think a female) is.

It seems to be very well fed too.

My partner in the snake business breeds balls so he is going to take it. I am hoping that it is a female. We will find out on Sunday when we can sex it.

What is it with ball pythons being found in weird places? Years ago, I was called to an apartment complex to get a "big boa" that the maintenance guy had found- it was a 3 1/2 foot ball python. And earlier this year, my best friend (who is truly an ophidiophobe and probably the *worst* person to find a snake) found one in the washer in her apartment complex. It scared her so bad that she had to have a neighbor call me because she was shaking so bad!

Many years ago I got a call from my brother when he was on a rescue/removal. He said that the snake was black with yellow bands and his partner thought it was a kingsnake and had almost just grabbed it up but he had stopped him because something didn't look right. Well I asked him where he was at and he said a tropical plant nursery. I told him to get the tongs out and use the catch box because what he probably had was a Mangrove snake.
Sure enough it WAS a mangrove snake. His partner would have gotten a rude awakening if he had grabbed that! It was about 4ft. and really mad. Imagine taking a nap in a nice tree and waking up in a strange place 6thousand miles from home, LOL!
THe snake was taken to the local zoo and they were glad to get it too.
