I wanted to share some pics of my most recent adoption, a guyana BCC male.
(was listed in my herp society's monthly newsletter)
He was bought about 5 years ago as an adult WC... treated at that time for parasites.
He was eating fine but always was picky... seems he's been off food now for 6 months.
He will kill live and even take (strike and coil) f/t off tongs, but after a few moments he
will drop the prey and ignore it. He is now being force-fed... I had the guy show me how he
did it, so I will be doing it myself this week since he won't eat the food I've been offering.
He is very very thin. It's hard to tell in the pics, but he has old shed on over 40% of his
body and tail ...

He is nice looking (IMO) and I tried to get the purple but it doesn't come out that great:

As you can see he does tounge-flick and is actually quite active when being handled... but
for some reason he just won't eat. I hope to get a fecal from him soon so I can have him
re-tested for parasites... beyond that, if anyone has any advice about this, that would
be WONDERFUL!

Thanks for checking him out... my first BCC.

#$%^&#$%^&#$%^&#$%^& wish i could get a bcc as an adoption. try hanging on to the prey to keep him interested. Maybe grab it and offer it to him again. Do you have the lights on or off when feeding. he may be killing now and waiting for nightfall to eat. My male bci does that. Very pretty boy ya got there

That is a really pretty snake! awsome, I'm sure he'll be better in no time. IMO, though 6 monthes is a little early to start force feeding... he does look pretty thin though maye not...
have you tried feeding at night? -Juggalo

OOPSIE Diane This is Hisba that posted that not me hehe

Hey Hisba.. The guyanas can sometimes be a real PITA when it comes to feeding. I have one that can be a real big PITA at feeds also myself. Try placing the snake in complete darkness, dark tote as well as a dark room, place a dead rat in there for it [ go smaller than actual size it can eat btw also], throw a towel over the tote and leave alone for like 6 hours before even attempting to check again if it has eaten ot not. Also make sure there is no noise around where the snake is while in the tote.

Another thing with the Guyana's..if their temps are not 100% perfect.. they will go off feed too, some of them.

Allthough he does look a bit underweight, he doesn't look like he's lost soo much yet that I would do tubing to feed him as yet myself.

Good luck with him nonethe less though

I'm so glad to see hisba back posting Pretty snake ya got there hisba. I'm with Lori on this one. Wait 10 days or so since ya just tubed him and do the dark secure thing. Kim's Suri is the same way. she has to lay his dead rat on a paper plate and serve it to him at the door of his hide....then turn off all lights and leave the room for several hours. If anyone walks through, they are greeted with the most volatile of hisses. Feed totes do not work with him either ...Good luck with him!

Thanks for the adivce and nice compliments. I am glad to be back around here.. even
if it's only once in a while. I did try offering him the food, tugging it, just leaving it, etc....
BUT I didn't turn his light off.. (I do keep his tank covered on all sides to try to help with
the stress factor) I will try putting him in a dark tub with no light coming in and leaving
for a looooong time. (I left him for about 2 hours before.. but I will try longer.) I need
to learn to be more patient. lol I did get almost all the old shed off, only about 10% is still
left on. I've been leaving him alone for the past few days, I'll give him a few more days of
rest, then I'll try the dark tote thing. He is actually skinnier than he appears in the pics... spine
shows but the ribs don't, so I guess he's not *that* bad off.
The house he was in before, he was in the living room, they had 6 cats, etc.... very busy place
which is what probably put him off food in the first place.
I am keeping his temps up, around 88-90 during the day... I read they like the slightly
higher temps than BCI. I need to get everything going on a thermostat tho soon.
Again, thanks for the advice! I will keep ya'll updated.

Richie, hihi! The albino and het are doing good. The het is in shed and I cleaned his cage
last night... he bit me on the leg. Ouch! lol The albino is a sweetie, turned out to be a really
docile snake. I should be getting their new 'boaphile cages' in another week or two.

I also just received the salmon female from Sprinter (mark) today.. yay!! She's at my
desk at work in a critter-keeper over a heating pad waiting to go home. Thanks Sprinter!

Just wanted to say a big THANK YOU for the advice.
I'm happy to say that Oreo ate on his very own for the first time in over
6 months.. it took three tries (one feeding attempt then wait 2 days, then try again, etc)
but third time was the charm. I covered his tank with a dark blue towel and turned off
the light, he took the food off tongs (like normal) but after leaving him alone overnight
came in the morning and the mouse was gone! whoooopeee!! It was the dark cover and
no light that worked. thanks again, I am so happy!
Hopefully he'll keep this up.

GREAT to hear that he finaly ate for you ! As for the hoping.. just hope that he is one of them that outgrows the dang ole eating in complete darkness thing. It actually gets to be a pita as time goes on lol. BUT ...Long as they eat.. Those of us who they own will continue to do "weird" things in "serving" their meals to them for however long they want us to My male is like this half the feeds. ABBY-LUV, the female, is like this ALL the time though
Now if your looking to put some weight onto him due to his weightloss , if any..then go with a 10 day schedule of feeds and give him 1 prey, two prey, 1 prey and so on. just keep in mind though that some of these "fussy' Guyanas will only take one prey item also...just to keep life interesting is all on their part....Just make the prey items to girth is all....
