This is JANICE , a greek tortoise. I don't believe her previous owner actually realized that the tortoise was not being cared for properly in the least. I'm not excusing such either..just pointing it out is all.
She actually started out as an adoption not a rescue. Once we got her into our possession here though it was quite apparent that she was in dire need of some rehabbing and would be a rescue/rehab for us to work with here. For starters, she has a beak which has overgrown on the top side as can be seen in this pic ..
You can actually see the length her nails were allowed to get to in this pic.....
There's more pics of her in her album http://photo.redtailboa.net/albun28

Proper diet is one of the biggest factors in having a proper growth of shell and beak in every turt/tort.
Couple that with good husbandry and there is not too much that will deform a shell, overgrow a beak etc..
For example, up to a few years ago, turts/torts owners were encouraged to feed primarilly dogfood which is extremely high in protien.
This practice caused a miriad of problems in the animals, from overall poor health, appearance, deformed growth in the shells and bones and a very short life span.
An example of way too much protein can be seen in this little turts shell. Look at it and compare it to a normall eastern box turtle.

Actually, the beaks can be trimmed , but with a file.
Best left to someone with experienc in shaping it other wise it can cause more probs than it solves.
As in any animal, proper everything is essential for their all around health.

The little one I have is still alive and hopefully will continue that trend.
As for it growing out of it, only time will tell.
