Re: Enormous extinct snake
That is too cool!
I want to go see it... who's with me?
If that snake existed these days, that would really give Florida a reason to flip out. xD

Re: Enormous extinct snake
whattttt. I hope they make some lifesize 3D models or something and bring them to a museum here in NYC so i can see!!
but in all honesty 43 ft. isn't that much larger in comparison to modern specimens in the 20 and 30 ft range, considering the size of ancient versions of sharks and lizards and fish in comparison to their modern specimens.
I fully believe that there have been larger specimens than this in history.. Just so many claims from early explorations in South America and such, they probably still don't exist because of Man's vast impact, but maybe 100+ years ago I bet we had snakes of this size thriving in deep areas of the world.
Always awesome to read about this stuff.

Re: Enormous extinct snake
Does anybody else think this is the snake people have seen when they report 50 - 100 foot long snakes?
Its not impossible that it is still living.. I mean look at that shark/fish that was thought to be extinct for millions of years then boom they find one alive and well in the sea
I personally believe that all the stories and sightings of huge monster snakes, 40, 50, 60 foot long are this species of snake
But thats just my opinion

Re: Enormous extinct snake
I was just reading about this lol it came up whilst doing some anaconda research. I'm of the opinion that there are still plenty of absolute giants out there, the Amazon has plenty of hides, so to speak. So does the congo, for that matter, and it has pythons.

Wow, if we could start breeding those, we could ride them to work.

Could you imagine what traffic jams would be like with every body was riding giant snakes?
With all this talk of giant animals I had to share this:

I don't understand why we have to kill anything that's impressive. I think they just wanted a trophy.

Re: Enormous extinct snake
John Bloch, curator of Vertebrate Paleontology at the Museum of Natural History at UF discovered Titanoboa. Notice the caption of the illustration is Jason Bourque (a herper as well) from UF. I've chatted with him a few times when he'd visit the mammal collection for specimens to compare. Really cool guy.

Re: Enormous extinct snake
funny enough on Moster Quest today, the guy was in south America in the middle of knowwhere talking to the local people about a huge snake that lives there. they described a snake this size! But the weird thing is that on one sighting in was basking over the river edge in a tree with a hive of bee's on top of it's head. lol

Re: Enormous extinct snake
Monster Quest is a pathetic show with so much grandstanding its sickening. I wouldn't believe anything that is said on that show.

Re: Enormous extinct snake
I told someone about the snake I have in another thread, that is 67 million years old, but I messed up. I said, "Hey...you wanna see a massive snake." I don't know why they got all offended.
Yeah don't get me wrong sniper, I watch those shows too. I mute the volume and turn on music though, and just stop to watch the shots of the cool reptiles. Something I learned from a guy I used to know. We would all sit around and watch the Dukes of Hazard with the TV sound muted, playing rock n roll in the background. Every time the dukes car would go flying we would all scream a "Yeah"...and then take a drink. Now Daisy just made us drool.
