Re: Python Hunting Season set for South Florida
What about all those cute puppies and kitties?
The cute fuzzy ones that go feral and kill native wildlife? The adorable feral puppies that run in packs and attack people?

Re: Python Hunting Season set for South Florida
Back on Topic, seriously. Preferably would like if Morti could just clean this thread up of all the useless off topic non sense.
#1, I live in Florida and would absolutely LOVE to meet a group from RTB to go as a group into the Everglades and seek out these snakes. I have only been fishing in the Everglades, for that I know the waterways, but I do not know the woods. I can tell you from experience it is strictly swamp lands.
#2, I think this would be an absolutely amazing thing to document. We should have some herpers along with someone that is not into capturing these snakes but more or less documenting the whole process maybe via video camera [Just an idea]
#3 I saw someone mentioned something about funding. That would probably be the hardest thing to do. The only expenses we would really have are the fuel to drive there, and your time spent. Preferably over the weekend.
Remember people I understand if you're a snake lover but the Everglades are not "fun" or something that you will enjoy doing unless you are a die-hard. The mosquitos are absolutely horrifying. Don't forget there are Alligators, and American Crocodiles along with rattle snakes and many other venomous snakes. Hospitals are not "convenient" as far as location.
I would like someone to lead RTB through the Everglades. Whatever connections you may have pick up the phone. Let's do this. I am native to Florida and this is what I live for.

Re: Python Hunting Season set for South Florida
we created a demand which drove dealers to stock them
we produced more animals than there were proper owners
It is just kinda lame that it took Burms to get the situation with invasive species on the big radar.
I am sure invasive plants, fish, and birds in florida are doing more real harm than the snakes are.

Re: Python Hunting Season set for South Florida
Jeremy, this hunting season does not allow people into the glades. It is for public land in the surrounding area. You have to have a special permit to actually enter the glades, and those are MUCH harder to come by.

What are the qualifications for obtaining one of these permits?

Re: Python Hunting Season set for South Florida
exsctly....doesnt matter if they are furry or not, they are wreaking just as much, if not MORE, havoc than the giant pythons not to mention they can reproduce alot more than reptiles....if they truely wanna save the ecosystem they need to take down all invasives, not just the ptyhons. but no....they just wanna further the ban on all snakes....

Re: Python Hunting Season set for South Florida
yes well what about the cobra snakehead (fish they are a HUGE problem downthere)
Furthermore, I am an out of stater have no hunting lisence or gun permit, but absouletely want to take part in thia, and I will buy one of those I own snakes and I vote shirts. I am thinking katana swords and a spear or air boat?
But seriously how would I go about getting a hunting lisence and one of these permits in time and how much would it cost? I have some family in Seabring and could probably crash there for a week and rent a car down there... I want to make a week vacation out of this... no I'm not kidding...

I didn't see anything on the link I posted concerning snake permits. However, there are permits for scientific research which this would technically be classified under and also a filming permit (you mentioned you wanted someone to film this) and a group outting permit which this would also be classified as if it was 20 or more people. As far as trapping or removing the snakes since they are an invasive species I wouldn't think that you would have to have a permit for that. I'm not sure as I'm not from Florida so don't take my word on it. On that link for the permits that I posted there is a phone number to the Fish and Game office for Florida. They should be able to answer your questions concerning this issue. If you call please let us know what they tell you.

Re: Python Hunting Season set for South Florida
It boggles my mind with these statistics of there being THOUSANDS of burms.
I understand there have to be quite a few burms down there, but not every one of those eggs survives. There are predators down there that will eat burm eggs.
I have read a handful of south florida herpers say they have been IN the glades and have not come across any burms, or maybe one or two on weekly (multiple times a week) trips in there.
This is fabricated beyond belief, I think. I wish the situation weren't so that we had to kill off the burms, that we could capture them and maybe bring them to zoos or something.

Hunters who buy licenses and pay the license fees are the primary income of every state DNR.

Last summer was the first time I encountered zebra mussels in the river behind my house. When we took our boat out of the water there were thousands of them completely caked on the bottom... the year before I didn't see any at all.

Re: Python Hunting Season set for South Florida
I have serious reservations about allowing the general public to hunt burms. It's my experience that the vast majority of the general public isn't well versed in snake identification. I would suspect that any snake with a pattern would be deemed a "baby burm" and killed. The perception is that herpers caused this problem and it would be great if herpers could help resolve the problem.
