America does not go abroad in search of monsters to destroy. She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all. She well knows that by enlisting under other banners than her own, were they even the banners of foreign independence, she would involve herself beyond the power of extrication in all the wars of interest and intrigue, of individual avarice, envy and ambition, which assume the colors and usurp the standards of freedom. – John Quincy Adams (1821)

OMG the snake is still alive, and at the vets office. I feel sorry for the snake.

It's kind of an unfair statistic when you think about it:
How many dogs owned by irresponsible owners have killed people since 1980?
If snake owners aren't more responsible (myself included) in general, we're asking for a ban. That's how they got pittbulls in Miami-Dade.
People die all the time, by many different animals or things. Especially those around the more stupid ones. Directing blame on the animal and not the keeper of the animal is an ignorant one-sided conservative decision.

Here's a better question - how many PEOPLE kill people annually? Never mind dogs, cats, pigs, snakes, etc.
We are the biggest threat to ourselves and everything else. This is just an excuse for the government to have more control.
I'm not one of those "anti government" nuts but good lord. This is ridiculous.

One of my friends brought this up too. It sounds to me more like child abuse and this is a convenient excuse.
Look at the size of that snake. The snake wouldn't have been able to eat that child.

Local news is garbage. Hype, fear, blood, sex all sell better than a measured and dispassionate examination of the facts. This is one of those 'if it bleeds, it leads' stories, that gets local news anchors all riled up, followed with 'man on the street' interviews of some local-yokel(probably holding their toddler) talking about how 'scary' it is that people are allowed to own such viscious creatures, and how there 'ought to be a law against it'. Sadly, but not surprising, news organizations are more interested in blaring sensational headlines that give the viewer at home the emotional experience of 'how terrible that murder/fire/accident/snake-attack is!' followed by the cathartic sense of relief that 'at least it didn't happen to me'. What a joke. Exploiting the child's death only compounds the tragedy.

Or how many snakes are killed by people annually...
It's tragic that this little girl had to suffer from such a dumb mistake that gives all snake keepers a bad rap. But honestly, this guy must have been retarded... who keeps a burm in a glass tank with no top?!?!?!?!?!?!?! and furthermore, it had previously escaped. If you notice it can escape, do something to prevent it from happening again.... grrr...
Not to mention I feel terrible for the snake. In all of the video, you never see it struggling, even though someone has a death grip on it's neck, and it still has that open knife wound on it's back! I just hope that the snake doesn't get put down for it's owner's stupid mistake...

I don't think it will be down, it is state's evidence right now, in the vets office, according to one of the links.

Re: Child killed by burm in Fla. - New ammo for the anti-herp people
We are just going to have to step it up a notch if we want to combat the government and prevent such cases from happening.
If we can educate legislators on how to properly contain and keep these animals. Education goes a long way for a lot of politicians. I'm not saying all of them, because some of them are dead set in their ideals.
I've worked with legislators in the past in repealing breed bans. I work with like-minded people and we all share similar goals. I see so many parallels between the banning of snakes and the banning of certain dog breeds. With the dogs, our group works on the local city and state levels, and we speak with politicians on these issues. The key is to be organized, straight to the point, and not send them conflicting information. A lot of politicians are willing to work with you if you don't jump down their throats and approach them in a calm manner.
Bans on animals are "band aid" laws, and don't solve the real issues at hand. The best thing to do is to work with people on providing better laws that protect the animals and people. If you can provide better alternatives and reach middle ground, you are off to a good start. My mother and I helped turn a potential pit bull ban in our city around by offering suggestions on better animal care and regulation laws, including licensing and microchipping. We have a 90% compliance rate.
I've never had to face a snake ban, but our local laws dictate that "dangerous" animals (such as large constrictors) must be kept in locked cages at all times, and must not be out in public other than for scheduled and educational purposes.
If there were a ban in the works, I would be the first person contacting the local reptile society in my area and start collaborating with them on possible solutions that would work better than a ban on certain animals.
Find out what the laws on keeping snakes are in your area and if you see anything that could be added or subtracted, talk to your city officials.
Dog attacks and fatalities resulting from them are much more common than fatalities caused by snakes, largely due to the fact that they aren't as common as pets and aren't expected to interact with society on a regular basis.
Keep fighting. It will pay off if you are persistent. I'd rather die trying and than die and not have tried at all!

Re: Child killed by burm in Fla. - New ammo for the anti-herp people
Wow... I think everyone pretty much said what I was thinking. That poor little girl. What irresponsible parents. If you can't afford the proper enclosure for such a big Python, then why even risk it? That is asking for something bad to happen. I hope that little girl gets justice. One more thing... I have been bit in the hand by my little red tail boa and that even hurt... I can imagine how getting bit by the python must have felt =(

I don't watch the news. I heard this story while I was out walking Jesse down the street. A woman in a car stopped to admire him and asked me if I'd heard the story of the child getting strangled by a python. "Great" I thought.

Yep. That's how it happens. Try having a dog labeled as "vicious" by the media.

Did they mention the last time the snake had a meal? It was probably neglected also and starving. This is just so tragic.
