Scores more, obviously. Dogs owned by responsible owners can also kill. But most people generally view dogs as slobbering, furry creatures that love us. We don't have a cultural 'lassie' type snake to engender warm feelings for herps from non-snake people. I'm sure many here will attest they get as much out of keeping snakes as other's do their dogs. But large snake-keepers are a tiny, tiny fraction compared to dog owners, thus they don't "draw much water". Know any Senator's keeping retics or burms?

Just saw the news and it showed the owners mugshot. He did not have a ROC permit. Granted the mugshot could have been previous, but it appeared that he was in custody. An investigation is pending charges

Re: Child killed by burm in Fla. - New ammo for the anti-herp people
It's a sad story all around. News reported that the man stabbed the snake numerous times...well how is it missing? This will only add to the HR669 fire. FWC will charge him with second degree misdemeanor for not possessing an ROC (Reptiles of Concern) permit.

This really... really just makes me sick, for all the reasons that have already been listed...

More fuel for the fire. Why can't people NOT be idiots? I feel so bad for that little girl. Who the heck keeps a 12 foot burm in an aquarium anyway? UHG.

that is cause they have never seen or met chance.
max is well fed and my daughters cats are always right at the front of his cage watching him. max just ignores them. he never once struck at the cats that are looking in. they have even batted at max while he is in his cage. he just ignores them.
i bet that this will cause the ban on pythons to go through
i wish people could just see some of us with our pets and see the love we have for them. this is so sad all the way around. irresponsible pet owners ruin it for all of us.
if the ban goes through...how do we prove we had our pythons before the ban? they can take those ones away, right?? no matter what they cant???

I'm pretty sure all the ones we have now are grandfathered in. It's one of their talking points with this thing "Oh it's not like we'd take your pets, you just can't get or breed any new ones. Ever." Like that makes it ok or something.
At any rate if they did decide to try and take them (which is highly unlikely and pretty much impossible to enforce anyway) it would be over my dead body. No one is taking my babies from me.

Re: Child killed by burm in Fla. - New ammo for the anti-herp people
This whole thing is just so horrible all around. For the little baby, the mother, the irresponsible owner of the snake, the poor snake, and all responsible people who own snakes as pets in the United States, period. This will be the deciding factor for sure, on the side of banning and in any new laws that are made from here on.
Careless people always spoil things for themselves and others and in the face of this accident, all the arguments and hard work for keeping these pets will likely pale into insignificance and will be summarily dismissed.

Re: Child killed by burm in Fla. - New ammo for the anti-herp people
I just watched the video.. The anchor stated that "attacks like this are not uncommon", and proceeds to give the 12 deaths since 1980 stat. I hate it when the media pulls stuff like that.
Sad story, though.

seems like the person didn't take the right percautions and also if he had locks why wasn't it locked and why didn't they hear the kid if the kid has multiple bites

Drugs/alcohol or both can put you into a stone cold sleep. Anybody care to bet if they were involved?

I was thinking the same thing when I read about this. Report says they woke up around 10-11AM to discover the incident. Who wakes up this late in the day with a 2-year old in the household?

Re: Child killed by burm in Fla. - New ammo for the anti-herp people
That little kid probably never had even a chance to scream, what with the quickness and power of the attack, much less be able to take a breath. I really hope this man gets punished for this ghastly incident and the horrible suffering of the baby and the snake.
