I'm betting respiratory infection, combined with the smell of other animals permeating the snake's enclosure, the constant buzz of activity, and a little love tap on his "keeper's" hand.
She over reacted to the situation, obviously didn't know bite-safety protocol, she obviously isn't a snake person...
Ineptitude is what's ruining this hobby.
It makes me sick.
I wish someone could go and rescue that snake and shut her down. It's her own fault. Her own stupid fault, and now everyone that was in the shop at the time, and everyone that saw that news broadcast, thinks that much less of snakes because of her.
Had it been me in that situation things would have turned out so differently, and it never would have involved the police, or the news, and it would have started with proper husbandry.
I hate hearing about stuff like this...

Don't blame the snake or the species for the idiot keeper. I know plenty of people who love keeping burms. I love my retic, even if she some times is not the nicest reptile.

wasnt blaming that paticular snake. just making a comment. most burms have bad tempers. yes you can tame them down but they are a more aggressive snake. Retics are awesome snakes too. IMO they are probably the smartest snake alive. I've actually been looking for a nice super tiger.

See now I have always experienced the opposite, all the burm keepers I know say they are "slugs" or "gentle giants" and that retics are aggressive and more difficult to keep. Most people who do shows for children use burms for the shows and not retics.

oh ya burms are more gentle than retics for sure. burms are usually aggressive and tempermental as babies and young adolesents. but when they start getting bigger they do tend to calm down. ive never had a retic of my own but have dealt with several of my friends. one retic inpaticular was mean from the first day up until it was about 7ft and my friend got rid of it. if its cage was open and you walked anywhere close to it it would strike at you. it was very aggressive mean snake. on the other hand tho i had a friend with a super tiger retic that was just as nice and calm as my guyana.

Re: Shop Owner Saved From Python Attack
I know Most of you have said this all ready, but I am continually blown away by the irresponsibility of some people. Especially a "pet Shop owner". You would think that someone who runs or owns a pet business would be educated in the very basic needs & Husbandry of the animals they sell or display. Lets see, 3 of the first few rules of snake ownership / care. 1. Research and learn everything you can about your particular snake of choice, 2. Husbandry - know the husbandry of your particular snake and maintain it, 3. NEVER EVER EVER HANDLE YOUR SERPANT AFTER HANDLING MICE, RATS, PIGS WHATEVER , WiTHOUT WASHING YOU HANDS.! Sorry this type of thing really drives me crazy! ( Off the soap box)
