Police find body of 5-year-old dragged into river as parents watched
MEXICO CITY - A crocodile seized a 5-year-old boy and dragged him into a river in western Mexico as his parents watched, according to authorities who said the child’s body was found Thursday.
Kevin Tapia Alatorre was standing with his parents on the banks of the Tomatlan River, about 50 miles south of Puerto Vallarta, when the 9-foot crocodile grabbed him on Tuesday, said Roberto Cortes, director of public safety for the town of Tomatlan.
Cortes said the crocodile emerged from the water at least twice with the child in its jaws. The animal fled after police officers shot at it, he said.
Rescue workers found the boy’s body on Thursday about 200 yards downriver from where the attack occurred, the Jalisco state Civil Protection Department said in a news release.

You cant assume they were feeding the crocs. That must be really hard on the parents to watch your kid go like that.

Re: Croc attack in Mexico
I was just in Puerto Vallarta two months ago on a cruise. It was a ton of fun. Looked for lots of herps on our tour through the "rain forest" but only found a bunch of iguanas.

Re: Croc attack in Mexico
They were feeding the crocs, and did not know it. It is a horrible thing to happen to that family and I feel it hard for them, but the crocodile was just helping himself to a handy meal.
More and more encroachment on animal territory by humans is what leads to this. It happens every now and then here in Jamaica, where we have large crocs who are endangered, stranded, hungry and desperately seeking to survive.

Re: Croc attack in Mexico
This is a tragic story but a reminder to respect dangerous animals. We are not necessarily at the top of the food chain.

Re: Croc attack in Mexico
How very sad!
.
There's lots of crocodiles in that area. It's strange how these stories grab our attention, and unfortunate too because it adds to people's fear and intolerance of crocs and other wildlife. Just earlier today kids were killed in a lunch-break car accident a short distance from my house, I heard the crunch and the sirens.. you'd be hard-pressed to find out about that tragedy without really searching the news in the next few days (and maybe not even then) yet a boy is killed by an animal and it's a shot heard 'round the world.
.
My heart goes out to those people..
.
Gus.
