Re: Crocodile Bites off Zoo workers arm!

Quote:
The crocodile severed Chang Po-yu's forearm on Wednesday at the Shaoshan Zoo in the southern city of Kaohsiung when the veterinarian tried to retrieve a tranquilizer dart from the reptile's hide, zoo officials said.

The Liberty Times newspaper said Chang failed to notice the crocodile was not fully anesthetized when he stuck his arm through an iron rail to medicate it.

As Chang was rushed to the hospital on Wednesday, a zoo worker shot two bullets at the crocodile's neck to retrieve the forearm, said Chen Po-tsun, a zoo official.

"The crocodile was unharmed as we didn't find any bullet holes on its hide," Chen said. "It probably was shocked and opened its mouth to let go of the limb."

The 17-year-old reptile is one of a pair of Nile crocodiles kept by the Kaohsiung zoo. The crocodile is listed as an endangered species, and is rapidly disappearing from its native African habitat.

Chen said the zoo purchased the crocodile from a local resident who had kept it as a pet.

I figured it was some error on the human end..lol

Re: Crocodile Bites off Zoo workers arm!

What did they shoot it with that the bullets wouldn't penetrate the crocs neck? That's some tough skin (or a lousy shot). And if the croc wasn't yet fully under the anesthsia, wouldn't it have kicked in shortly

Either way, bad luck for the keeper, but an interesting pic of the arm in the crocs mouth. He's lucky it wasnt worse

Re: Crocodile Bites off Zoo workers arm!

Well I would say its definitely a mistake on the keeper's part.... lol

Um but they did reattach his arm, so that's a good thing I guess.... I would think there would be a lot of unfriendly bacteria that got in the wounds though... eew.

Re: Crocodile Bites off Zoo workers arm!

Hmmm...what an interesting story and I'm glad the guy and the croc survived.
I think if it were ME I would have been very sure the croc was sedated thoroughly BEFORE I reached in there!
Interesting pics and I'm glad he will be ok!

Re: Crocodile Bites off Zoo workers arm!

Didn't that keeper ever watch Steve at work with his crocs?

Glad he got back his arm, hope it still works.

Glad the croc is OK!
