August 8, 2006 - Residents of one Richland County neighborhood told WIS' Maggie Alexander about the water moccasins breeding around their homes.
Most of the neighbors have seen them. Venita Tyler describes them as "
kind of small but they're just everywhere." Rosa Gordon had a slightly different encounter, "
He was big. He was black, about as big as my arm. That was scary."
The creature causes neighbors to kill. Roger Lorick says, "
I came out one day, one was real aggressive and I had to kill him." Horace Johnson wouldn't tell us how he fights the snakes, "
It's my secret how I kill them."
The venomous snakes are invading a neighborhood near Piney Grove Road in Columbia. Lorick tells Maggie that she came on a good day for viewing them, "
When we have a big downpour, like we did tonight, you can see them running down the stream."
Residents on Newnham Drive say the snakes have become worse since Richland County built a ditch behind their homes. Tyler says, "
I've called the county 10 or 12 times. Nothing has happened. I had one supervisor come through." The biggest problem is that the snakes are now breeding.
Last week James Artemus killed a snake in his back yard. He took a picture as proof, "
I was cutting the grass and it just jumped out."
Richland County's spokeswoman tells News 10 the Public Works Department will check the ditch by week's end.
